Believe it or not, the .280 was actually the caliber I was looking at first.  Then I realized that it was a 26" barrel, which I am not too wild about considering I do a good bit of walking up and down the mountain we hunt.  I also noticed that the factory ammunition is more pricey and also a little scarce.  I know this is a great caliber, but those two things kinda put me off.  By the way, my buddy will probably get his 06 barrel for his handi before I get a 2nd barrel....so I'll make sure I shoot it before making a decision.  I thought that would make a lot of you happy....just somethin about that 06 that makes people fall in love....haha.

Nova:

That little bit of extra weight might matter if your doing a-lot of climbing...but go to shoot it off-hand ...and you'll be glad it's there...and off the bench will help with the recoil.....whichever one you get...handloading will make it easier to taylor a load for your shooting needs...and once your set up..the availability of factory loads won't matter as much...

I wasn't taken it personally, I was just reminding that I had not really compared those two bullets (the 150's), more it was the 140 and 180 in my mind.

I don't think there IS an answer to Nova's question.  Like he said, maybe he just needs to shoot one and pick.

I'm considering a new Handi in synthetic for the mountains and cannot decide which one either.

A 30-06 to go with my Savage, or a 30-06 to convert to 338-06, or a 30-30, or a 30-30 to convert to 375 Win?????

Decisions, decisions!

Handi:

Go for the 338-06...but use a 25-06 barrel for the extra lenght...4" will make a difference when tossing out those 200 Plus grain bullets...staying in the right pressures for the Handi's...I'll most likely go this route...all the talk about them has wetted my appitite for one...

I don't want to stir up the pot, but I have a dumb question. Has anyone notice if one round has more tendance to not eject over the other in the Handi rifles?
I am looking at getting another barrel in addition to my 243 ( which will not eject on rare occasions, usually when you need that quick second shot :)). I was considering the 308 and never thought about the 270, there is a lot of food for thought here.

That is a good point.  The only negative, to me, is I'd have to buy diff ammo till I made the conversion.  If I buy the '06 barrel, I might change my mind and I want a deer, bear, elk gun.

I have the Savage bolt but the rub (literally)for me is I shoot left handed, but carry it on my right shoulder (blame the Army) and the bolt always sticks in my side.  So this is not real fun to carry.

I'm working up the loads for my 375 94 Big Bore for deer, elk and bear up to 200yds, 150 or less preferred, but I'd still like something for longer range.

I know the 25 is a fine deer cartridge, but am leary of it for anything larger.  Of course that would force my hand a bit.  I can also change the barrel on my Savage pretty easy to a 338-06 A-square from midway.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Handi:

I wasn't talking about using the 25-06 barrel as is...but to rebore it...and enlarge the neck & throat...you would have the advantage on velocity being a 26" barrel...and still staying in the 30-06 pressure range...and the velocity is pretty important on getting those 338 bullets to open...one I'm looking at is the barnes 160 grainer...if you can get them to group good enough...would make an excellent mule deer load & up...take a look at the #5 Barnes manual...I know you can't match all their velocities in a Handi...but you should be able to get fairly close...3100 fps is nothing to sneeze at...and with the 175's...2900 fps...2800 fps...with the 185's...(2900-3000 with the coated)...2700 with the 200's...and so on...I think you get the picture...
