Boy its cold out there!!!
« on: January 14, 2005, 05:39:22 PM »
well, this mornig i passed my driving test on my first try and figured i'd head up to the local range BY MYSELF, it felt weird being the only one in the car and do someshooting. the Tempurture was -51 degrees faranheit! my cheek was frozen to the stock of my AG42 and i noticed that the bolt om my SMLE would become sluggish if you let it sit for a while. shoulda degreased it. i thought you folks from a way down south in the land of cotton might like hear what the weathers been like up in here the frozen wastes of Canada.

BTW i was going to shoot my targets for the postal match but that crummy Igman ammo was shooting all over the place. tried it on a rest and it didn't get much better. have to go back to $20 a box Remington ammo. Federal groups real tight, about 2 feet above the point of aim. what's a gunnut to do?

You nuts?????????           It has only gotten to -30 actual Temp  here over night with a windchill of -50 yesterday windy with a -15 actual temp and No way would I go out and shoot. To me it would be a waste as I doubt I would enjoy it and I do not even think the range will be open this weekend. I consider my self a gun addict but I guess you have me beat!

I have never seen it too cold to hunt, but if it's not at least 50 degrees I'm not going to the range.  I picked up a new Encore yesterday but will wait until it warms up a bit before taking it to the range. We have been running in the 50s-60s except for a few day around Christmas, but last night it got down to 28, so I'll just stay home except for the two hours or so it takes to spread some range cubes and make sure the cattle have water...........

The coldest I have done any target shooting has been 17 degrees above.  I usually can handle mid-20's on a regular basis, use wool socks.  The problem is that I sit for 2-3 hours on a wooden seat, if I was hunting, it would not be so bad.  This is in the Minneapolis, MN area.

I also use light cotton working gloves to allow me some sensitivity to the trigger without having my hands exposed, even then I have to periodically put them down my shirt to warm up.  I have proper heavy gloves, but they lack the contact to the trigger that gets me the good groups.

I like how the rifle barrels cool down fast, not at all like shooting when it is 90 degrees and humid!  After my Yugo Mauser was hangfiring I came up with an idea to shoot in cold weather without degreasing the bolt.  After firing a few rounds, bring a plastic sandwich bag, put the bolt into it, and then put it down your shirt, under your armpit, etc. for a few minutes.  That should keep it warm.  Then pop it back into the rifle, shoot 5-10 rounds, then back into the plastic, under the armpit, repeat.  I haven't tried this yet, but it should work for everybody in the cold climate. :D

Armpit bolt?         The bolt should not have that much grease on it that it would not work in cold weather. Think about it The folks who fought in WWII and the other wars in cold climates had their guns functioning fine. Bolts do not need a ton of lube to work and less is better in this case.

So how do you gear yourself, firearms, and vehicle to go out and shot in such nasty weather.  When I was a LEO we went out and trained in nasty weather because our life might depend on it.  I have hunted waterfowl in the grain fields at -18 and deer at -10 but never in the extreme weather you are talking about.

But for general target practice it has to been on the sunny side.

i love shooting( although i'm a lousy shot) and like i said i just got drivers license so i can finally go out as often as i like without having to get rides. plus i spend almost everyday at work and i'm sick of either looking a pizza dough or the walls at home. i had to get out and do something and it was too cold to go icefishing. it was sunny with very little wind so it wasn't that bad. i was wearing long underwear, jeans, heavy winter boots,a t-hirt, a flannel shirt and a parka on top plus a toque ( watch cap for you American) and fairly light gloves. had to keep my fingers moving or they would go numb. i'm also fairly well insulated naturally. in total i shot about 25 rounds of 6.5X55 and 20 of .303. with all that clothing you don't really notice recoil. i was only out for about half an hour to forty five minutes. plus like i said i spend about 6 days out of 7 at work, even on days when i only work five hours theres's not enough time before sundown to get out there so when i have a full day off i do what want regardless of the weather. ( to a point)

Very cold at the Match today in South Western Oklahoma and a limited number of shooters showed up.  Was lucky enough to get my 23rd Clean Match today, so........what cold weather???  I didn't feel a thing!!

As for the bolt being stiff have you tried a dry lube, it helps me when I get out shooting and it is cold.
