What are the good, bad, and ugly statements on this piece? How does it hold up to the Ruger 1022?

As a moderator I will refrain from comments on this gun as I have never owned one or shot one. I had several badmouth my Henry on a other site and refrain form doing the same with other guns I have no expirience with. I have heard good and bad about them but then you can pick good and bad about any gun? so I will wait to see what others may say in reply to your post. You might try RFC (Rimfire Central ) as they I think have a section just on the Rem 597. Jim

Well I`ll put in my two cents, I worked as a REMINGTON REPAIR STATION, for 5 years and I can tell you that the 597 could not go the long term distance with the 10-22.
Just one gunsmith`s view point!

I ran across this post and just had to throw in my opinion. I bought a new 597 last year and put a scope off my model 60 on it. I have not been able to get it to sight in yet! It moves all over the place. Scope is tight and in good working order. I wish I had bought a 10/22. I have a model 60 but it jams a lot. I just wanted a dependable 22 to do a little Squirrel hunting with after Deer season. The 597 was not it!

I bought one for my son to burn bricks of ammo with. The gun jams, short cycles and stove pipes. It really turned my kid off to autoloaders. You can't shoot a magazine of ammo without a jam or two. After doing some polishing and other mods that you will find on rimfire central it will shoot the Federal bulk ammo without too many problems, but its not very accurate.

I would not recommend the gun.

My kid loves his Henry lever action!

I think the 597 is the best rifle I have had. I had to shoot about 50 shells through it to break the barrel in. I cleaned it, put a scope on it, and shot up every taget I had.

After about 3 years I had a problem with the clips not feeding right so I took it apart and cleaned a crap load of gunk out of it then streched the spring out a little. Shoots like a dream now.
