Scope for a Sidekick muzzleloader
« on: December 06, 2004, 06:08:42 PM »
Hello,

I am looking for a scope for my Sidekick. I am not sure what power I should buy. I am looking at a Bushnell Banner 3x9x40, a Simmons Pro Hunter 2.5x10x50 or a Simmons 2x7x32 Blackpowder. I will be hunting whitetail deer in upstate NY most of my shots will probably be in the 150 yard and under range though there might be a few in the 200+ yard range. I would consider other models but I don't want to spend more than $100. Am I better off with 2x7 or 3x9?

That's a pretty cheap price point. Take a look first at the Bushnell Trophy line and check the prices with my two Scope selling advertisers here. Optic Zone and SWFA in alphabetic order. You might get one for that. If not the Banner is a pretty good scope and I do use them with satisfaction. I have one on one of my Marlin 336s. For deer hunting you do not want a 50mm objective so I'd forget that one. The 2-7 is plenty and if you hunt in mostly woods even the 1.5-4.5 Banner like I have on my Marlin is plenty. Don't go over 3-9.

I have an Elite 3200 1.5x-4.5x-32mm mounted on my .375H&H Mag.  Let me tell you, that scope has help us PERFECTLY and has great FOV.  I think that it's in the $165 range, but I know for sure that I bought it from Jon at theopticzone.com.  Still, it's well worth the price!

Thanks for the reponses. The main reason I was looking at a lower priced scope was that the Sidekick I purchased only cost $159.00 (Wood stock with blued barrel.) I really didn't want to spend more on the scope than the gun itself. By the time I puchase the base, trigger extension, high mount quick release rings and the scope it looks like I will be spending more on the scope than the gun. Right now I am leaning toward the Bushnell legend 2x7x32. Its a little more money but its got some nice reviews. Basspro has them for $129 and there is currently a rare Bass pro coupon out there for $12.50 off a puchase over $125. They also have a $10 off $100 and a $7.50 off $75 coupon out there two.  All the coupons are good till 12/31/04.

Thanks again.

Forget the vairable power scopes they are big and heavy and you don`t need them. I muzzle load hunt with a 209-50 Encore and it wears a 2 1/2X Leupold scope on it, you don`t need any more. I would also recomand you get a Leupold, when you sell the gun you can keep the scope and use it on another gun. I`ve got Leupold scopes that have been on a dozen different guns.

I was going to say the same thing Willy.  I would also recommend the Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32.  For $120, it is a scope that is tough to be for clarity, brightness and durability.
