Does anyone have experience with the Ruger 44 Magnum carbines? I have been handgun hunting with a SRH but my eyes are starting to go. I am thinking maybe a carbine will serve me better in the woods.

Bigger has got to be better right?

Never had a Ruger .44, but I have several short rifles. If you are experiencing normal middle aged eye change, it will actually be harder to shoot the carbine than the handgun, unless you go to a scope or peep sight. Moving the sights farther apart makes it much more difficult to focus.

i have four ruger carbines in diferent configurations.i use them here in the adirondacks for deer hunting,very effective on distances to 100 yds.set up with a electronic red-dot type sight or a small compact low power scope these make an excellent deer rifle.the older carbines have become fairly expensive,i have no experience with the new auto-loader.
if you keep them clean and use a good load they will serve you well.i use a load of 22 grns 2400 with a 240 grn xtp feeds and functions great.very effective on game.
another ruger 44 you might want to consider is the 77/44 bolt action no need to worry about jamming,and you can shoot any load you want from it without worrying about them feeding.they use a rotary clip similar to the 10/22 i have one of these as well real accurate little bugger.my 11 yr old son likes to shoot this one,i expect he will prob use it to kill his first buck as soon i dad lets him.lol good luck,shawn

I like Ruger guns, but the Ruger 44 Mag carbines never did it for me. I chose the Marlin Lever action over it.

I have heard good things about the Ruger carbines both old and new. Almost bought one several times but didn't just because you can't shoot cast bullets in them because of the gas system fouling. I went with a Win 94 trapper and a Lyman peep sight. It is MUCH easier to hit with than a handgun for me. I still enjoy my handguns, but I am no Elmer Keith... I might still get one of those Ruger carbines one of these days, maybe I'll surprise my Dad with one.

I had a stainless 77/44 for awhile and loved it. A neat, compact hunting arm which was very accurate for a .44 Magnum rifle. I mounted a 1-4X Leupold on it and really enjoyed carrying it in the field.

The only fly in the ointment was that cartridge length was limited by the magazine - some longer bullets could not be seated to the cannelure. A bit of filing on the magazine helped a little, but this was really a minor problem. A 180 Sierra at 2000 fps flattens smaller deer with a ribcage hit, and with minimal recoil. A 300-grainer at 1500 fps however..... :shock:

Have had an original Ruger carbine for many years. Staying with jacketed bullets never gives a problem. Uniform case trimming seems to make a big difference in groups. Always used a Sierra 240gr JHC over 21.6gr (what my fixed cavity throws) of 2400. Groups far better than it should. Always stayed with lung shots with this bullet. Just never took time to work up a penetrator. With an old K3 Weaver, just throw it up with both eyes open, pull the trigger and get the knife out.
