Two More Critters In The Freezer
« on: January 04, 2005, 10:07:33 AM »
I was lucky enough about three weeks ago to take this hog and whitetail down in South Texas.  Both were shot with my 15" 7-08 Encore.  The hog was about 50 yards and the whitetail was 94 yards.  Incidentally, the buck was aged at 7 and weighed 173 pounds.  Handgun hunting is truly a drug!  The pictures are poor quality as they were taken with one of those disposables.  Don't ever forget your good camera when going hunting!  Thanks for letting me share.

A big congratulations to you on the hog and deer.  :D  And with a handgun to boot.

That's a nice buck.  What part of South Texas?  My son and I both killed nice eights in our area, they were fairly big for Taylor Co, feild dressed about 110-120 each.  They are nice healthly animals, nice racks, just not big bodied.

Thanks for the comments!

Rockbilly, this ranch sits about 5 miles east off of IH35 right in Artesia Wells.  I couldn't believe the size of the deer.  By the way, the 173 was live weight.

Randy M, When you said South Texas, I was thinking a little further south.  I guess we are lucky, Texas has so many diffrent areas that hold good deer.

Since the season is over here, I guess we can just dream until next year.  But it did feel kinda good to sleep in this morning.  I can make the gun show this afternoon and not have to rush so I can get back to the deer stand.

With all the recent rain, we should have a great year next season.  I hope you do even better then.  :D

Rockbilly,
Actually, my season doesn't end till Feb. 28.  I'm very blessed in that the ranch I hunt (as my season lease) is MLD Level 3.  My only concern is finding the buck I'm after before he sheds his antlers.  I've only seen him one other time this season.  He is a 6 year old 8-point that will score in the 150 range.  Other than a ranch cull, I've held out all year on this ranch, hoping to see him again.  With the cold front moving through today, I'm planning on hunting hard the next three days.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Randy
