Hammers or Mueller scopes
« on: January 07, 2005, 08:29:49 AM »
Hi all,

Wasn't sure where to post this question, but I figured the varmint shooters are probably very knowledgeable about long range shooting and scopes.  I recently purchased a Bushmaster V-Match .223, and I want to put a reasonable power variable mag scope on it.  I've been looking at things in the 3-6X low end and 10-16X on the high end.  The Hammers and Mueller scopes are very reasonably priced compared to many of the others.  I did see one review of the Mueller scope that really liked the very small illuminated dot.

I plan to do some 100-300 yd target shooting and maybe some coyote shooting to start.  Beyond that, I have some friends in a local R&G club that are doing some even longer range shooting.

Any of you familiar with either of these scope brands, and whether they are of decent quality, or junk?

What would you recommend for this setup?

Is it worth getting one of the scopes that has the multi dot reticle set up for the .223?

thanks!

Larry,

I just put a 4-16x50 Mueller sport dot on my Rem VLS 223. It was on the 25-06 Encore before and worked great. I didn't like the German type retical for the 25-06, but I plan on keeping the .223 around 250-300 yards and under.  The nice thing about the Mueller dot I like is it is suspended. That is the cross hair stop just short of the dot. Good at the range and fantastic on prairie dogs. Just hard to quickly judge extended range shots like on a mildot.

I guess I like their offerings because I just got a 4-16x50 Mueller Tactical with the new mildot retical. I haven't had it out yet, but it's mounted up on the 25-06 barrel right now. Just waiting for a bit of range time to ring it out.  For me though, that may be months yet.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply.  Since you bought another, I'm guessing you like the optic quality and light gathering also.  They are much less expensive than many of the other brands, but I saw one review that was positive and wondered if they might be a great opportunity to get a good scope at a good price since they are not well known.

Bought the new 4-16X Mueller with Mil-Dot reticle

Well, we shall see how I like it.  I bought the limited run of 4-16X Mueller scopes with the Mil-Dot reticle.  They had a special deal direct from them for $169.  The center area of Mil Dots is all illuminated at low light.
