model 70 stealth 2 in .308
« on: December 22, 2004, 07:00:29 AM »
im looking into buying an all around gun for coyotes to moose was wondering if the .308 win is a decent moose cal for under 200yds like .308 because its a good round to reload and its ballistically similar to the 30-06 in a short action anyway the new model 70 stealth 2 was one of the guns im interested in cause i like the heavy barrel and hs precision stock also the idea of a controlled round push feed sounds appealing any comments or thoughts on this setup would be helpful thanks

I don't own a Stealth, but I know people who do.  They seem like good solid guns with better than average accuracy.

I just set up a Md70Coyote for a guy in .308 recently.  Really good looking gun.  I've been thinking about picking one up in 270WSM.  I shot some factory 150 grain Federals out of it sighting it in and got some pretty good groups.

C.J.,

I won't comment on .308 for Moose, but I can give you some insight into my Stealth in .22-250.

Although I did go through the gun with my usual accurizing, i.e., lapped the lugs, installed a Timney trigger, and glassed the action even though it has the alum. bedding block, I have been very impressed with this rifle.

It is by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.  The only rifle which has printed .3" groups for me.  I have had some problems with my Winchesters of recent manufacture, but this rifle is not one of them.  I suspect that the .308 version will be a tack driver.  Damn heavy for humpin' through the boonies though!  Best of luck with it!!!

cj, i also own a stealth in 22-250, i got in a deal with a couple other guns, the deal was to good to  pass up. never a big fan of winchester at the time. but once i got a load figured out it shoots .4. it is a solid rifle. this is a very heavy rifle do not think my old a** would want to tote it on a hunt.

gwindrider i would like to know what load combo is working for you. my best groups are with 34GRN IMR 3031 and sierra 53mks.

Arky65,  that load that is working so well for me consists of the following:

Fed. cases, fireformed, and short sized(not neck sized).
CCI Benchrest Primers
38.5 grns. of Reloader 15
50 grn. Nosler BT. bullets seated .020 off the lands
3875-3900 fps.
Warm load, but the rifle seems to like it!

If you plan on hunting moose with this rifle/cartridge combo, I wouldn't get it. The rifle lists at 10 lbs. minus the mounts and the scope you would put on it. Carrying a rifle like that all day looking for a moose wouldn't be fun.
