This is the gun I grew up with, my dad still has it, and you are right, it is a shooter. It would digest everythings from CB shorts to Stingers.
Growing up on a farm, you never know when a .22 will come in handy. One of my jobs in the summer was cultivating soy beans and spraying them for weeds. I always caried this .22 on the fender of the tractor wrapped in a couple of bean sacks. Boy at the groundhogs, rabbits, crows, and wild dogs that old gun has taken down! They just don't make'm like that any more!

Congratulations on getting a fine old Remington rifle. When I was a kid, my dad had a 550. It was the very first gun I ever fired. My dad taught me firearms safety using that .22 rifle. Sadly, my father passed away almost two years ago. The 550 has been gone many years. I think I need to find one to use while teaching my granddaughter how to shoot.

My Dad taught me to shoot on his 550-1 when I was a yonker.  He bought it the year I was born - 1957.  I squirrel hunted with it, along with some shotguns too.
A few years back, he handed it down to me - it's still a pretty good shooter.  The stock I refinished when I was sixteen still looks pretty good too.  It's on it's third scope now though.  The old 4X and 6X Weavers were wore slap out, and now it wears a Simmons 3-9X32.
