Remington 740 won't eject shells
« on: March 29, 2005, 06:48:51 AM »
I recently inherited a 740 in 30-06 from my father-in law. I broke it down completely & cleaned all the crud out, as well as replaced the firing pin, because it wouldn't fire when I first got it. Now it fires, but won't eject the cases all the way. I have to complete the cycle and the case ejects. Has any other 740-742 owners ever experienced this? I had lighty lubed the action where the slide rides before I ever took it out to fire it. There is one thing that I did notice last night when I took the action spring off, was that the orifice ball that is inside the piece where the gas comes in from(I don't know exactly what its called) to operate the semi function wouldn't come out when I took out the retaining screw that held the ball in. Is this normal or is this ball supposed to move feely? I would greatly appreciate ANY advice or help. Thanks & God Bless!(I've posted this on the remington forum as well)

The orifice ball often gets stuck in place by carbon, copper fouling and/or rust. If properly maintained, the orifice ball should be free to fall out when the screw is removed.
When you get the ball out you will need to clean the orifice. Use a good solvent to soften the accumulation and, very carefully, clean the hole with a #44 drill bit. The nozzle should also be cleaned and this can be accomplished using solvent and a #38 drill bit. The drill bits should be used only with your fingers and not chucked up in a drill. This may very well clear up your problem.
Also, you might check the chamber closely for rust or pitting as either of these can slow the action enough to create the problem you describe.

Thanks for the advice. I got the ball out & I will clean the tube & orifice. Should I lightly lube the ball when I put it back? Thanks again & God Bless.

No need to lube the ball. Just reassemble clean and dry.
Good luck.
