Blue surface of melted lead?
« on: December 31, 2004, 04:12:05 PM »
Hi,

I got a bullet casting kit for christmas, so today I was melting down lead that I got for free.  I am almost positive that it was pure lead, and I had 125 pounds.  I was melting it in a big pot on the side burner of my BBQ to pour ingots, and if I let the lead sit for a while the surface turned blue and purple? Is this normal?  I just stirred it up and kept casting.

Thanks

Might have a bit of tin in it and your running it kinda hot. Back off the heat a bit or get a good thermometer if you are just using a open burner.

pure lead will do that. I no chemist but i think its related to the fact that it takes more heat to melt pure and it causes a little oxidation on the surface
