V917 trigger question
« on: December 28, 2004, 09:03:59 AM »
I just bought a 917v for CHRISTmas and was wondering if there is a way to lighten up the trigger pull. It seems kind of stiff.

  Thanks in advance.

P.S. Which scope would do well on it?

I think the 917 you mentioned is a marlin. Might get more responses in the Marlin forum but I'll do my best.

Rifle Basix has a replacement trigger group that lists at about $80. I just put one in my Savage 93 22 mag, no range report yet but initial opinion is very positive.

In terms of scopes, I have a Swift 3x9x40 AO on my Marlin 25n and really like it. I am seriously considering more of these scopes. I don't recall the price but more info can be found at www.eabco.com .

I hope the little info given here is a help.

If anything in my above post was helpful, you are welcome.

If a moderator could duplicate this post to Marlin Rimfires, maybe az300 could get help from those really in the know.

The T-900 trigger in the 917V(S) is actually pretty easy to work on and can be lightened quite a bit. Or, the Rifle Basix trigger can be added for $65-$80 depending on whether you can find it on sale or not. The link below shows the steps to modify the trigger. As with any trigger work, be sure to test the rifle for accidental discharge before loading it. Make sure the safety works as intended, that the rifle will not fire unintentionally when the rifle is bumped tested by dropping it on the butt on a carpeted floor, and not fire when the bolt is closed or the when the safety position is moved to fire.

az300wsm, the optics you choose is mostly determined by what you want to do with the rifle and how much you want to spend. I have 6-20x40 Bushnell Scopechiefs on both my Marlin 917V and 917VS, and a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40 on my CZ452 and a Swift 669M 6-18x40 on the Sportster, so you can see that I like to shoot small groups and be able to take ground squirrels to the limit of the 17hmrs range which can be in excess of 200yds, easily.

Nixter,

Your post was helpful! Thanks!  After reading it I went on a search for the Rifle Basix trigger and you are right on the money with price.

  quickdtoo,

Thank you for the info. I will have to do some thinking on which way I want to go. As far as scopes go I think I would like something in the 6-20x40 power range.I will do some looking at the Scopechiefs, it sounds like a good choice for it.

Az, the RB trigger just went on sale at Midway for $57 if you choose to go that way. I wouldn't try looking for the Scopechiefs very hard, they don't make em anymore, but if you want a comparable scope, look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40,  Legend 5-15x40, or the Mueller 8.5-25x50 at The Optic Zone. Call Jon for the best price at 1-877-564-0286.

I didn't use all those shims on mine.

I just polished the inside mating surfaces to smooth the contact between the trigger and the housing. Then slide the trigger in place and  squeeze the housing with pliers to size it perfectly to the trigger.

Took out every bit of side to side wobble in the trigger.
