Its been said on another forum by another big sks collector and i have to agree that the quality of the chinese sks surpassed the russian sks.  The chinese really got their act together in manufacturing too. I wish more were imported again too.  I got my very first brand new chinese sks for $59 and it came with a 1,000rd case of ammo too this is when they were first imported and for sale here in the US.  At first they were trying to sell then for $1,000 and none were sold until the price dropped to $59 and they threw in a case of ammo too then the rest is history.  I think most were afraid to buy them because of the new weird caliber that no one manufactured here and they were worried about being stuck with no ammo which did happen too for a while many yaers ago.  Everything dried up too the 7,62x39, the 7,62x54 and the 8mm which was very expensive.  My last case of chinese norinco ammo was $125 back then and after that there was none to be found of course we have a flood of imported ammo now.  I was lucky i still have 5 cases of the orginal Chinese norinco ammo and one case of German 7.62x39 too.  I even have a case of chinese 7.62x54 from back then too.  The Chinese Norinco ammo is very accurate in the chinese sks too.                      BigBill

actually Bill, i don't think you do want a new Chinese SKS. we get them up here in either standard model or the D variant. from what i've read on some of my Canadian boards the quality on them is non existent. for starters the barrels aren't threaded into the recievers, they are crush fitted and then a pin is inserted. what little quality control Norinco has is letting unsafe rifles slip through. i've heard tales of guys who have fired a few rounds through a brand new gun and the barrel just fell off. a friend of mine is getting into shooting and wants an SKS for a starter gun. i told him to save his money and by a new unissued, unfired Yugo M59 for $299 CDN or M59/66 for $329 CDN from Marstar. i'll probably get one myself. seems that the only thing Norinco can get right is the 1911, M-14, and there .22 rifles. these items are of very good quality and reliability, but the rest of there products......

Like any thing else some chinese guns are good some bad. Most I have seen were good though. the 45's and the Browning copies are excellent and the Chinese SKS I used to have was a fine gun. I just got rid of it as for the power of the cartridge I would rather shoot a 30/30 lever gun and I have fallen for the larger cartridges and the bolt guns that shoot them ike the 762x54 Mosins and the Mausers in their various calibers. I will say one thing if you can find one of the Chinese copys of the Walther Olympia ( 22LR ) buy it as it is a excellent made copy and they shoot just as good as the origionals.  I would not trade mine no matter what it is a keeper!   Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have many different chinese sks some with pressed in pinned barrels and some with threaded barrels.  Most sks owners say the pinned barrels are the most accurate.  My very first one that i hammer all the time since i got it when it was brand new is holding up ok and is very accurate.  My latest paratrooper purchase is shooting 1 1/2" @ 100yds benchrest.  I was pinging small rocks on the berm at 100yds with it before we benchrested it.  I have bought many brand new chinese sks's and never got a bad one. I'm even still finding/seeing Sino Soviet sks's and chinese sks's in unused condition here too between $175 to $225.  I guess most bought them and shot them once and they sat in their closests for years and they want to get rid of them now.  There are still good buys out there on these awesome guns.                                                      BigBill
