I thought I would post this just to add to the already observed theory. I trapped a rather small slough for one week and caught 14 beaver and 1 otter. All the beaver sign was gone with no repeat customers but decided to leave the traps in since it was close to the house. That was 2 weeks ago and i have caught 2 more otters and 3 more beavers since then. Thats about $300 dollars if you include the charge for catching the 3 beavers. If I had pulled my traps when all appeared to be gone I would have missed that truck payment. So if it is at all possible and not to too far out of the way it is true that its best to leave them set if you can.

Kenny(woodchuck)Houpt---good bit of advice .Otter take a bit of time getting back to an area, pulling to soon can be an opportunity missed.

Those are good points Kenny and Tom. If I lived in a state with no otter limits I would leave the set for maybe all season.
One thing I have found out on those otters is even if they come around every couple of days it is pretty tough to catch them when a beaver is already in the trap.

Steve, that is why I like to gang set. With several traps in one area, your odds increase of not only catching several beaver at once--but also having traps available when the otter do come through.Doubles and triples are not uncommon with otter.
