Cabin Fever Musings "Cheap Canoe Gun"

Hello All,
I have been monitoring the posts on the BP forums for a couple of months now and I suppose that an attack of Cabin Fever got me a thinkin' (which may be dangerous) I pickup a by-monthly mag that has articles on BP, General Woods Craft, and lore. In a recent article they discribe a BP weapon called a Blanket Gun (AKA a canoe gun). No they were not made to shoot the former nor latter, but to be used as a handy short range weapon. The Blanket Gun was used by Native Americans in the Mid 18th Century against the British-American Milliary (pre-revolution). The Canoe Gun however is an invention (recreation?) by gunsmith Jackie Brown of a short and handy Flintlock Muzzleloader, usaully smoothbore. These guns usaully sport 16 to 24 inch barrels, .50 to .69 caliber. I am thinking (dangerous) about the little (and cheep) CVA Mountian Stalker in .50 or .54 cal with its barrel cut and crowned (front sight reset) to 16 to18 inches and using medium to heavy bullets in front of 60 to 70 grains of FFFG. I would love something like that as a companion in case I jump a hog on my forays in the family's back 40. Thoughts?

It's funny you should bring that up now Kjeff. I was thinking a few weeks ago about buying one of the H&A boot pistols with a rifle stock that they market as a canoe gun. I do use a canoe and I also like a small, powerful gun with me all the time. I've been using my 44mag but I want something with a stock. Anyway....I started thinking about building something. I have a number of barreled actions but I wanted something with about a 12" bbl.

In order to do that I would need to either go without the stock, or make the barrel 16 (18 for a shotgun) or build a muzzleloader.

It just so happens I have an inline 12ga that I hate. It's a nice shooter but doesn't suit me as a hunting ML. I think I'll build a lamanited stock with a pistol grip and a detachable stock. A 12 inch barrel with a poly choke will give fair patterns, enough power and make it compact enough for easy carry in a short case. This will include the stock and several preloads.

I may start on it this coming week!

 That sounds like a good idea, as far as muzzleloaders are exempt from all that GCA 34/68 etc. length requirements and limitations. Only limits are how sensitive are you to muzzle blast from a BP charge going off roughly 18" from your face   . Remember to load down to get a cleaner burn of the charge. I used to have a Uberti Baby Rolling Block that some enterprising gunsmith rechambered from the original .357 magnum to .357 Maximum! I in turn had the barrel trimmed from 24" to 18"!! This little gun was my favorite woods loafing gun and I took squirrels (with 38 wadcutters) to several deer with full power Max loads (they usaully took only one step before falling over dead). I a fit of stuppidty and desperation (I needed transportation) I traded it and a sum of money for a very used 78 Camaro that did not last two months before the engine quit. I do miss that little cabine. I think I may go through with the canoe gun because where I go hunting 100 yards is a long shot.

  About 15 years ago there was a 12 ich or 14 inch double barreled cap and ball muzzleloader shotgun in 12 gathat was manufaactured by I think either NAVY ARMS,or one of the DIXIE import type.  At any rate afer about a few years the feds took them off of the market,and now ya cant have em due to them being ruled a short barreled shotgun.  I wish I had never sold mine,but I can remembr the maker of it for sure.  Only had it about two years.   King :roll:

I remember that double barrel it was called a Confederate shotgun and it was chambered in 12 gauge. Also it "looked" too much like a "modern double" (coach gun) for their comfort and no doubt was as effective  :eek:  (at least the first 2 shots). It as you all know according followers of "Brady" if it looks like it can take-out an army division single handed (Rambo???) then it can take out said division. That is why I may just shorten my Mountain Stalker canoe gun within "modern limits". I just had a thought also about shortening modern looking inlines, according to the ATF if it quacks like a duck.... :roll: .

:-D  :-D  kjeff50cal....Yup,thats it ..wish I had never got rid of mine,never shot it much due to using the longer bbl ones fer grouse and woodcock,errrrrr woodcock at any rate.  Cant hit grouse fer crap with em.  Fer some reason I have something like the TERRY TEXAS RANGERS running around in my head.  That came up last night after I got off the forums and went to bed.  Strange.    Probably come up with the answer to the above question in the future.  I think ya hit that little short one on the head.      :shock:  :shock:  :shock:   king
