45/70 compared to a 12ga. slug ?
« on: January 15, 2005, 05:30:05 PM »
How does a 405gr. bullet from a 45/70 travlin at 1850 fps. compare to a 12ga. 1oz. slug travlin at 1650 fps. ?     Isn't  1oz = 438gr.s ?

I would imagine that there are a ton of complex variables and advanced mathematical computations that could answer that question. Projectile shape, barrel length, powder and primers used. I true rifleman and serious shooter should be able to answer these question without even a second thought. I am however just a simple hunter and my quess is that the deer being shot with the 45-70 will be 121.6% dead where as the deer shot with the 12 ga will be merely 100% dead
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Markus, Wonderful answer, but you forgot to include the breeze supplied by the Monarch butterfly wings in the Amazon Delta, that causes a ripple in the water that changes the coarse of a leaf that has a beetle on it that is will be eaten by a smallmouth bass.... ect..ect...ect...  :-)

Actually the best way to do it is to shoot a deer and then ask him if he could tell if it was a .45-70 or a 12 gauge. :-D

Well, they will obviously both do the job at typical "woods" hunting ranges. Where the 45/70 will have the advantage is at any kind of extended range, being that the BC is very high on most of the bullets available. This means the bulllet doesn't slow down as fast. The typical 12ga sabot slugs have terrible BC's so they slow down and lose energy really quick. The other advantage of the 45/70 is that it can be handloaded to much higher velocities than you could ever push a shotgun slug. I suscpect that accuracy is probably much more inherent also with the 45/70, than with a saboted slug, although I don't have a "scientific" explanation for that.
