Anyone know how much recoil in pounds the 200gr bullet produces? Trying to compair the 45-70 to 356.

DAD, I don't know how much the recoil is in "ft. lbs. of energy". I know it kicks more then my 35 Rem. (w/ 200 gr Core-Lokt) and not as much as my 444 Mar. (w/ 240 gr Core-Lokt). My 356 Win. (actually my fathers I gave it to him) is a Winchester model 94 and is a "little lighter" then my 35 Rem. which is a Marlin 336CS. I'd say its probably right in the middle of the two. I've never fired a 45-70 so I don't know how they kick, I'm guessing its more the my 444 Mar. even when using factory loads.

Posting this link even though Chuck doesn't list .356 Win. Might help in putting numbers to the comparison list New Youk Hunter offers.

The 45-70 loads Chuck lists are the standard factory loads that are safe for trap doors so for the hotter 45-70 reloads you might compare his numbers for .450 Marlin.

Several message board sites have recoil calculators. If I go by one tonight, I'll come back here and post its address.

I think huntingnut.com and huntamerica.com are two, but I'd have to check.

You have to include such data as powder weight and firearm weight that most of us don't have readily available.

I own both, a model 94 in 356 and a marlin guide gun in 45-70 with a ported barrel. The 45-70 kicks more.

The 45-70 was my second choice, but in standard barrel lenght. I don't reload so the recoil calucaters are good for handloaders. Its factory ammo for me.

with heavy loads my .356 is a pussycat compared to heavys in the .4570

Hey Dad, I just read your question about recoil difference between a 45-70 and a 356 Win. I ran some calculations to determine the difference.

The recoil from a 45-70 is 25.3 foot pounds of energy.

The recoil from a 356 Win is 17.3 fpe.

I used some moderate loads to determine the findings above.

The difference is 8 foot pounds of energy. The increase in each footpound of energy is not linear like each pound is equal to one pound in felt recoil. 8 pounds is a lot more recoil.

17.3 fpe is similar to a 30-06 fired in a 7 pound rifle. I consider the 30-06 to be my max tolerable recoil for recreational shooting.

Clark, Thank you for your reply and everyone else also, I'm realy considering the 45-70 and a very good recoil pad. A couple of the ones I'm looking at is the Decelator pad or Pachmayer#990tripple web. The gun will be Marlin in the 1895 standard 22" barrel.

If you are loading your own, of course it will vary. My ft-pounds of 45-70 hunting load is up over 40. The plinker with pistol powders is down around 7. I load one load in the 200gr. 356 and with a lighter gun like the 94, it does kick, but the muzzle rising is the most notable thing. To me, it is not even in the same class as the hot 45-70 loads. I have not ever shot any factory in my 45-70, but the loads are fairly mild, and the recoil should be fairly similar. Both would be somewhere around that 30;06 in recoil.
