The .50 Rifle
« on: January 09, 2005, 01:18:24 PM »
They have a section on 60 minutes tonite on the rifle. They're looking to ban it as a terroristic threat. They gave Wako in '93 as the prime example for the ban. And of course the inventor of the gun and two other members of the opposing side had different views and they hashed it out. But we might be at a loss here guys.

With Waco in 1993, the assailants used the .50 to penetrate the police forces. Even one of the types of tanks were penetrated with the .50 gun. So they brought in the most sophisicated tank that finally knocked them out of commission.

What I would like to know is where 60 Minutes got the 50 cals. for their program. I missed it but if the ligitamate owner volunteered use of one what in the h@#$ was he thinking. I am surprized they didn't have Michael Moore go out and buy one. Oh, by the way, I love to lug a rifle around that weighs 30 lbs. Think I will go out tomorrow and order me a Vulcan Gun. That really should get a rise out of Feinstein and Chucky Schumar and then I am going out and mount it on my HM-2. They will want to outlaw Hummers next.    :?

Well, the guy who invented it, Ronnie Barrett, more or less took 60 Minutes on a tour of the gun and it's capabilities and defended it to it's max. He didn't loan 60 Minutes one of his guns nor did he leave it unspoken. Thankfully. The main point of the show was that California had recently banned them, but the other 49 states haven't yet.

The story from 60 Minutes

Thanks Fishman209 for the link to 60 Minutes and the story. It just seems like these news organizations want to keep stirring things up to suit themselves.

The 'assailants' used the .50........perhaps you mean the 'defenders'???

dont ever forget that the government were the agressors.   i dont condone everything about the branch davidians.  but for sure the government has blood on their hands on this one.   bush senior used military force on civilians, which is illegal.   and we wont even open the conversation up to randy weaver's family.

the 2nd amendment was written so that every citizen has the power to fight the government, and i dont mean in court.  yes, it is ugly.  but it is a right our forefather's gave us, just as important as our other rights-if not more important.

one last thought-  the various police forces are NOT the ultimate authory, although many of them like to think they are.   john q. has just as much right to own these weapons as the military.

Wrong. Sorry, read that news report I posted, they have it as the assailants used the .50 Barrett to penetrate the Bradely armed vehicles and it worked. So they brought in more sophisticated tanks to deal with the problem. Unless CBS worded it wrong, that's what the news story says.

'Seems to me that the whole argument from the anti-.50 side is that the rifle COULD be used by terrorists.  They'll admit that it hasn't, and pooh-pooh the notion that they have now put ideas into the heads of those who might.
Well, why haven't they outlawed Corvettes?  They are quite capable of both breaking the law by exceeding the speed limit and causing death thereby.

Not a good thing to tell them.  There are already certain types of racing cars that are banned because of this possibility.  Such laws could technically set a precedent.

In all honesty though, the .50BMG is relgated almost EXCLUSIVELY to target use.  Nothing in North America can be hunted with one, and people actually committing crimes are not going to choose one of the things to break the law with (too heavy and for the most part simply rare).  They're essentially one of the most "innocent" guns out there.  The friggin .22LR is responsible for far more crime per year than this is.  To even consider banning this gun is insane.  I guarantee that within 15 years they'll want to ban all bolt actions with a scope as a so called "sniper rifle".

Yea...that's kinda ironic. They were sayin if Dan Rather followed up on the Bush story a little more such an incredulous error might not have occured (then again, how old is he? ). Either way, that gun is at stake and we need to keep that in mind with our senators and govenors and all them good guys (or bad guys).  :D

I'd just like to add that the .50BMG makes a great, long range Elk rifle.  And yes, it IS legal here.  Especially if you sit on a ridge top and use the bi-pod. Thank you for your time.

It was a neck shot at approx 250 yards.  We weren't going to take the rifle with us, but one guy kept insisting on it.  I decided to set myself up on a ridge and wait.
