Guys,

I've got a new mauser with no markings on it that I can tell. The bolt is missing, and the stock is cut off and in bad shape. I have found matching numbers on the barrel and receiver. It appears to be about a 6mm to 6.5mm, and it has a pencil thin barrel. I would like to buy a new bolt for it, but first I have to Identify it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looks like you have an Arisaka Type 38 - a 6.5 mm.

it looks an awful lot like a very abused type 38 Arisaka. and the markings on the stock appear to be Japanese characters. since it's already bubba'd you could cut the chamber to .260 Rem or 6.5 Swedish Mauser, refinish the stock, get a new bolt with a turned down handle and mount a scope. you would have an excellent deer/pronghorn/predator rifle.

If it is a type 38 the reciever ring shold have a Crysanthimum stamped there, or it should have a place where it was ground off. The Crysanthumum was the seal of the emporor. Captured rifled would have the flower intact. Surrendered rifles would have it ground or filed off. Other than that it does look somewhat like a type 38. A type 38 should also have grooves on each side of the reciever where a sheet metal dust cover rides back and forth.

It does have the groves down both sides of the receiver, for the dust cover I guess. Is this something that is unique to the 38 Arisaka? I am definitely going to get a new bolt for it, I just want to make sure I track down the right parts. Thanks for the help guys.

I also believe that it is a 38 Arisaka.....and I have some history on your rifle......

You generally can't just buy a new bolt and pop it in. Different bolts will headspace differently with the barrel as installed. A different bolt will (likely) headspace differently than the original.
