Best .223 Factory Ammo in Handi
« on: January 12, 2005, 12:44:05 PM »
I am looking for factory ammo for my .223 handi, mostly for target and varmint type shooting (chucks, foxes).  I'm not real concerned about long range shooting, I just want something that will shoot well to say 200 yards.  I have only shot the cheap Russian 55gr FMJ's so far and they shoot OK groups, nothing to write home about.  I know alot of guys here swear by the Winchester white box 45 gr. JHP's.  Has anyone done any comparing to the Black Hills ammo?  I know they offer a variety of bullets which is a plus.  I know that ammo is anywhere from 12-18$ a box of 50 depending on bullet choice.  How much do you pay for the White Box?  Has anyone noticed if a particular bullet weight shoots better than others in factory ammo?  I know you reloaders probably have a wealth of knowledge about bullet/powder combinations that shoot well, but thats a little above me right now.  Thanks in advance!

I'd imagine that would be different for each rifle. Try the white box. I only reload, so I've never fired factory ammo in any of my rifles except my Colt Sporter.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

I'm new so take this with a grain of gunpwder.I bought UMC REM. 55gr.MC'for 3.97x20 at Wally, they shot as good as I can shoot..I bought 200 white box varmit 45gr. jhp's for 11.39 x40 at Gander, they both shoot good Varmint shoots super. I bought a selection to fool with, some boxes were 17.00x20 but with my old eye that Varmint is where I'd spend my money.

all the best,

Nova,

Us reloaders Sometimes have a lot of knowledge, but here's a quick tip that gets you caught up with something important that we all should know:  every rifle, handgun, and shotgun, is a 'law unto itself'!     No matter what any of us find success with, you may or may not get good results in your firearms with the same things that someone else's likes.    You have to shoot a firearm with a few loads (at least), and sometimes more than a few, to know what it really likes -- if anything -- and what will meet your needs for accuracy and cost.    Even then, when changing from one lot of ammo' to another, you may get different results! :(     These variations account for the reason why we're supposed to work-up our loads....

But don't let it worry you.    It's part of the game that we play, and part of what can make that game so interesting.    Stick with it, studying all the while, and you'll reap the benefits.  8)

Good shooting,

SS'

SS,

I am aware that each gun will shoot differently, and you're right...thats part of the game.  But thats also what makes it fun.  I was actually quite surprised when I read and found that so many people were getting good accuracy from the same ammo.  I'm glad this task is more fun with the 223 than some of the other calibers that may make it like a chore recoil wise.  Thanks for the responses guys.

Went to Gander Mt. last night and the Winny whitebox was 18.99 for a 40 pack.....I thought that was a little much so I split a 50 ct. box of Black Hills 55 gr. PSP's with my buddy to see how i like them.  They were only 12.99.  Went to Wal-Mart today and they have the whitebox for 12.49...thats sounds a little better to me.  I'll try them next if the Black Hills doesn't cut it for me.

At the range today I was getting slightly better groups with the Ultramax 50gr V-Max than the Win; I think they've become my new favorite. My local gun shops have a lot of the black hills ammo; going to have to try some as well. Then that'll mean MORE shooting; it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it, right?  :-D

Before I started reloading for the 223 Handi , I shot the American Eagle Hps. They were inexpensive and accurate.
