7-08 neck size

First the disclaimer.  Sorry for the dumb question, but I don’t reload at least not yet, and don’t know much about reloading.:-)

I was wondering what is the difference between a standard 7-08 round and 7-08 .306 neck round?  Can I size 7-08 factory ammo neck to .306 without taking it apart or much reloading equipment?  Is it advisable?

I recently bought a 7-08 .306 neck barrel and was wondering if I need to reload to shoot this barrel or can I size the factory ammo neck to 306 and if there are any other alternatives?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Smokey,  The basic question is if standard 7-08 ammo will fit the 7-08 .306 neck chamber?  If not what/how I need to do to use a factory ammo in my new barrel 7-08 .306 neck chamber?

Hobbyiest :  The question is a little vague, a 7mm-08 with a neck the size of a 30-06 I believe is what you were asking would be a standard 308 round, you have some figures confused or we are confused as to what you are asking ( I am not trying to be a smart elick ) I just dont understand the question. :D    JIM

I think what he is asking is:

He has purchased a 7mm-08 barrel, but the chamber is cut so that the outside neck diameter is 0.306" instead of the standard 0.315".

If that is the situation, then factory ammo would not fit since it has an outside neck diameter of 0.315".

It could possibly be forced to fit in the 0.306" chamber, but the pressures would be greatly increased.

Guys, sorry but I think it is me as I am not too familiar with the specifics of this round.  I looked at an older issue of Cartridges of The World.  It doesn't say anything about the 7-08 neck diameter but the bullet diameter is .315.  How is that possible?

Maybe I should go back to square one.  I bought a Hart barrel that was used for 300 meter competition and barrel is marked 7mm-08, .306 Neck.  How is that different from the standard 7mm-08 chamber?

.315 is NOT the bullet diameter for a 7mm bullet!

Read what I just posted above... :(

Ricciardelli,  Sorry I didn’t see your previous post.  You sneaked in while I was responding to jhm.  :-) Thanks.

So this is essentially a .306-08 wildcat?  I am into T/C Encores now and was planning on have it modified to fit an Encore frame.  What do you guys suggest since I don’t reload (yet) and  Encore doesn’t have a bolt to force the 7-08 into the chamber?  I would rather buy factory ammo since I don’t have the time necessary that will probably take to build the most accurate round for this barrel?

No, what you have is a 7mm-08 chamber with a tight neck. Tight necks are done so that precision shooters can reduce case neck thickness so that it matches the chamber neck to within very tight tolerances, usually about .002". Factory ammo should never be used in a tight neck chamber. This barrel would be no good for shooting factory ammo nor would it be a good idea to for a novice handloader. If there is insufficient room for bullet release you could have a disaster waiting to happen.

Never force any cartridge into any chamber even if the bolt is capable of camming it in. Either factory or handloads should fit easily in a chamber. Sometimes an experienced handloader will fit cases so that there  is a  slight bit of tension as the bolt is closed but this is not what you are referring to and is really something for the advanced loader.

My suggestion would be to take the barrel to a gunsmith and have the neck opened up to SAMMI specs. It should be an inexpensive and easy job for any competent smith. Then you could safely use factory ammo or have a much safer chamber to begin to reload for.

Hope this clears some things up for you - VH

Varminthunter, thanks for great information.  Tomorrow I am mailing it to my gunsmith for eval and perhaps rechambering & conversion to fit a TC Encore if barrel is not shot-out.

Thanks again.   :D
