Finally got that Bird's Head Vaquero into action.
« on: January 16, 2005, 08:20:22 AM »
Yesterday I was FINALLY able to get to the range with my new Bird's Head Vaquero and fired some moderate loads of 245gr. cast SWCers. Its a fun gun to shoot (of course!) but the accuracy is not really good with that load, I'll have to expiriment a bit and see what's better.  Its a pretty hefty piece so I'm thinking hotter loads won't be causing any recoil problems and that'll probably shrink my groups a bit.  This'd be a good trail gun (as if I've had any time to get onto any trails in the last ten years!).  This is the older Vaquero, not the mini they are making now (juz kidd'n Ruger fans).  Bottom line is I'm glad I bought it and someday it'll get passed on to one of the grandkids.

there a nice piece. Biggest obstical to them in accuracy is the small grip makes it tough to get a consistant hand grip but practice makes perfect.

Right you are, Lloyd.  Also, the right load will make a big difference.  I'll have lots of time over the next year to expiriment with different loads and powders.  Right now I'm using AA5 but there's a bunch of powders available for the 45 Colt.  Its gonna be a fun project to work on.  As for that grip, the middle finger on my right hand is FAT, from doing physical labor all my life, and I gotta be careful about keeping my knuckle away from the trigger guard.  It takes about 25 round for the message to start getting delivered in a big way!

dont feel bad ive had the knuckle operated on twice from the pounding of the linebaughs and big .45 and .44 loads. Its about a glob of scar tissue now. My favorite .45 colt midrange powders are herco power pistol and unique in that order you might want to try them.
