expect a small amount of heat on this subject, but id never let owning only a 223 stop me from hunting my faviorite big game animal. use either the  loading with the trophy bonded bear claw, or the winchester power point loading 64 gr
i limit my range to around 50 yardsas  i set up by a feeder when i had mine be careful.  im not going to lecture on proper caliber as when i only had a 223 i never let it stop me. from hunting pigs. stick with a head shot if you can

Go to the post titled “What .44 bullet for hogs” here in the Hog/Wild Boar Hunting forum and see the picture posted by JJ Hack, our resident Professional Hunter/Guide, that shows a cross section of a hogs hide.  That’s not fat your looking at but hard gristle plate an inch and a half thick.  That is asking a lot of any .22 centerfire to penetrate.  My advice is buy a bigger gun.  Lawdog

If i had to use a 223, i would use a 60 gr. nosler partition and shoot for the neck. I would not go for a shoulder shot unless the pig was a small sow. The neck shot with a high speed bullet causes a hydrostatic shock that will disrupt the nervous system. Hogs i have shot this way have gone down on the spot, not to get up again. I will say though, i have never shot a hog with a 223. Keep the shots close, so as to keep velositys high for that shock effect. Just my 2 cents worth.

55 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw; 60 grain Nosler Partion; or a 64 grain Winchester PP. ONLY take head/neck shots. Hit them right behind the ear and they'll drop.

I work with a couple of guys that nail hogs left and right and all they use or have are 223 rems and 222's. The one with the 223 rem uses nothing but the remington core lokts and never has a problem. If you are proficient and comfy with that particular gun and caliber then why not use it.

When I got my AR15 carbine I shot several with Winchesters 55 grain fmj.  This bullet penetrates a bit and breaks up into aproximatly 2 pieces. I stuck with neck shots and did not hesitate to shoot again. For hogs under 150 pounds and real well placed shots I guess it's ok but the 30-30 is where hog guns begin in my opinion.
