Skunked again in Oklahoma, NOT Part 2
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:45:28 AM »
Went out last Friday, no wind, about an hour before dark.  Went to the old spot mentioned in the other post, coyote tracks and poop everywhere.
Set up at the edge of a field with the field on one side and woods on the other.  Had the 9 yr old son with me and started calling with the Johnny Stewart electronic call, distressed rodent.  Just let it run solid for about 5 minutes.  Two coyotes came running in from the woods.  At about 20 yards, the lead dog turned around and started the other way.  He stopped to look back about 30 to 40 yards out.

(I just bought a Savage .17hmr and sighted in the same morning.)  Hit the yote in the neck and dropped him like a rock.  When we walked up to him, it looked like a murder scene with blood EVERYWHERE.

Then moved about 100 yards down the fence and saw a yote running along the edge of the next field.  We dropped down and started calling.  Again, within 5 minutes another yote ran along the edge of the field.  One shot at about 40 yards with the .17 dropped him.  I took the son's .22 (shooting Stingers) and hit him again.  I then let the boy shoot him for the third time.  We laid our guns down and crossed the fence.  I kicked him to make sure he was dead.  My boy said "Dad, he's looking at me."  I went near his head and his eyes followed me.  I told the boy to go get the gun and followed behind him.  The boy crossed the fence and handed me the .22.  When I turned around, the yote stumbled but got up and RAN LIKE A GREYHOUND thru the woods.  I could not get off another shot.

In the past, called at least 10 to 15 times, never saw anything.  That day, saw at least four within 20 minutes.  Go figure.
