1. Out of all the military guns which one do you like the most?
                                                     (bolt action and/or semi-auto)

2. Out of all the military calibers which one do you like the best to shoot??

                                                                                 BigBill

my answer;

1. For a bolt action its a swede mauser,  for a semi-auto its the Hakim.

2. My favorite caliber is the 6,5 swede, but the 8mm is a close second.

Just have one, M48A Mauser, 8mm, I really like this rifle. Almost no recoil, get more from my CZ carbine in 7.62X39. Ammo loads easy, loads into the chamber nicely and once the pre-travel is out of the trigger lets off pretty good and is accurate for a open sight rifle with me behind it :-D .

I really like them all. The Swede  Mauser and the 7x57 Spanish 93 are mild to shoot and have good BC. They both will be good hunting rifles the swede a scout  set up and shortened and the 7x57 has a conventional scope set up and sporterised.  Plus the Swede is so nicely built and finished. I like my Mosins also the 44 a scout and the 91 is fun also as it is one of the oldest ones I have.  My 8MM  Turk I have regulated to a cast shooter with a peep sight on it. Bought the mould for it and the cast sizing die just now have to get some gas checks. The bore on the Turk is excellent and so is the headspace so it would shoot factory and other reloads great but I decided I would just shoot cast out of it for a plinker as I have other guns to hunt with and this one at 29 inches is kinda ungainly in the woods. Though not as bad as my 32" barreled Remington Rolling Block!  :)  :)  :)
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

bolt gun would be obvious, any of the Lee-Enfield family. although i did try an '03A3, quite nice.

semi is my Ljungmann (only semi i've used regularly) and caliber again,6.5X55 in an AG42b. no need for a wussy pad.

I'd have to go with my Turkish 8mm Mauser. Swiss K-31 is a close second in 6.5x55.

Did they make a variant in 6.5x55?  (the K-31 is normally chambered in 7.5x55).  I would normally just assume that's a typo since the 6 and 7 are so close but this is the second time I'ver heard of someone refer to a 6.5x55 K-31.  Just wondering.  Such a thing would definately rank high on my wish list  :-).

Anyways, back on topic :) :

1. I'd also go with the K-31 for a bolt action.  It's a heck of an accurate rifle and the design is very interesting.  As for a semi-auto, I'd go with my SKS, since it's the only semi-auto milsurp rifle I've got :).  Still is fun and CHEAP to shoot though.

2.  6.5x55.  Yeah I know that none of the above are in this cal, but my Swede Mauser is sporterized so I didn't include it in the above.  Excellent little round.  Plenty of range and power for hunting without the heavy recoil associated with most military bolt actions :).

BigBill,

My all around favorite = 1939 8x57 Vz-24 Mauser w/ Leupold 2x scout scope.

However, most fun to shoot (and most expensive) = 30-M1 Carbine,  Inland Div. serial no. 674xxx.   Anyone know what year?

My favorite bolt rifle is a toss-up between the Swiss K31, and the new (to me!) Enfield No.4 Mk.1/2 I just got.
The K31 gets the nod for sheer accuracy, but the peep sight on the Enfield makes it a very close second!  I had four rounds inside an inch at 100 yards in one group this last Saturday.  Old Mk. VII British ammo, too.

For my favorite semi-auto, I'd say my CETME.  Best bang for the buck besides an SKS!   :grin:
Second choice, my Yugo SKS.

I enjoy my Mosin's, and I am awed by my sewdes but for a bolt gun i don't think any can surpass my K-31's .  I owm three.  As far as autoloaders it's the AR followed by a tossup either m1 carbine or any of the AK's. As an ex Air Force, Viet Nam era troop sentimental value is placed on the Ar and the carbine, but the Ak is a masterpiece of design........Essex County

Put another mark in the K-31 column.  Tremendously accurate shooting for both of mine.  (Or would that be two marks, then?)

1) Auto - SKS, (Boring Old) Bolt - M10 Ross

2) Cartridge - .303 British
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!

Big Bill;
Know just what you mean, just when I think I know something about milsurps, some one comes by with something totally different. I like 'em all, I can sit with an old '03 Springfield on my lap for hours and wonder where it's been and what it's been through.

S.Sumner kind of keeps the interest up with the new finds/guns he posts about. Since he posted about the JAP Rifles I'm seeing more and more of them at my local dealer.  Guys are even trading them in right infront of me there too. The last guy said they weren't shot since the war.  I'm guessing there war bring backs.  He had a 7.7 and a 6,5 with him.  And after finding out there are 1,000 different mausers when i first started out collecting I figured just a few would do.  It must take many years to find all the mausers that were manufactured since their beginning.  But it does sound like an imposssible task.  Were kind of lucky we can still get some 8mm's,  7mm's and 6,5's right now even though were hitting the bottom of the barrel.  I wonder what the future will be in the next 20 or 30 years? Will we see these automatic weapons the military is shooting now changed over to semi-auto or single shot by then if the laws change by then?  Who knows what can happen with the european union and the one world goverment taking over little by little. I'm hoping it won't hit here in my lifetime.

But back to the topic there are some here who are posting some different military guns yet and i hope they continue to do so too.  I was only stumped at one gun show by seeing one gun it was a finnish mosin a M28 ski troop 91/30.  It had two sling loops on the butt end.  They looked like they were in the snow a longtime.  One was ok and one had screws in the stock.  By the time i went home and found out what they were and i went back to buy one the good one was gone and i realized the other was really in bad condition. My point is there is a lot of different mosins too.  Gun shows lately are funny too because sometimes there will be one sks, one mosin(44) and a few mausers and then the very next gun show its flooded with SVT-40's(3), Hakims(4), rasheeds(3) and so many FN49's I couldn't count there is such an influx at times.  It also seems that accessories are winning out over the amount of guns too.  I'm seeing more and more old lever actions too lately like the Teddy R. style of levers too in with the modern guns.  This actually brings up the question what direction will you go with your collection in the future when the surplus military guns runout?  Or do you think the gun shows will fill the need for our finds.  Does anyone have any thoughts or plan on what your going to do in the future?  What are you doing now with the surplus ammo running out are you stocking up or plan on reloading when its gone?

With .303 being my favorite caliber and supplies seeming to be really sparce I am reloading for that caliber and having fantastic results.
The other milsurp calibers I shoot are still cheap enough and in good supply.When and if they start getting scanty all I have to do is buy more dies.The basic reloading equipment can be purchased for less than $75(Lee anniversaty outfit).
