"Entry-level" BPCR - What do you all think?
« on: January 22, 2005, 09:34:27 AM »
First, I gotta say that it is a pleasure and a learning experience reading this forum.  There is a lot of knowledge and a lot of really good people here.  I haven't posted much, but I enjoy the heck out of reading the posts.  Anyway, one of the most beautiful rifles I ever held was a Shiloh Sharps.  I definitely lust for one, but not if I'm not going to shoot it.  Getting near retirement, I have to make my purchases and choices wisely.   I've thought of a 45-70 Buffalo Classic as a starter to see if these old eyes, with some good sights, could still do the job anymore without a telescope.  Since I love Handis and I love to tinker a bit, I thought I might send one of my frames in to have fitted with that 45-70 32" barrel.  The barrels come without sights, so I could order the correct sights from Brownells, a nice stock and forend to finish from Gunstocks, Inc., and kind of make my own "entry-level" shooter.
I don't really know if I'm missing something or not.  I'd probably have about the same money in it as just buying a Buffalo Classic, but it might be a fun project.  Your thoughts?  Good shootin'. :D

First off welcome! Yes this is a great place to learn about our little adictions...  I have the 32 inch Buffalo Classic barrel on a regular receiver nd enjoy the heck out of it...I do have a scope mounted on mine though...if ya can still utilize the iron sights there are several that can be added to your Barrel...do a search on the site and there are several threads right now regarding sights....what ever you deside ...enjoy it and be sure to tell us about it on GBO!! :D

Cement Man,
That sounds like a great plan, and a lot of fun for retirement. You might want to look around for sights, http://www.thunder-ridge-muzzleloading.com/p_sights.htm has a nice rear sight, the USA #473 and the USA #451 front sight.

If you going to do your own stock for the BC I would use Rock Maple.
It is very close grain and tough and adds some extra weight, which comes in handy with the big bore recoil. It can be antiqued with with a torch and some diluted nitric acid to bring out the grain. This will add to the classic looks. Of course the curved brass butt plate can easy be made by hand.

When working with rock maple you need to keep your tools sharp. :)  Gunstock Inc has some Rock maple preshaped stocks.

Many years ago I made a stock from birds eye rock maple, they are simply gorgeous.

Big Blue, will that rear site screw onto the existing holes or will a smith have to drill and tap new ones?
