Predicting # of snowfalls
« on: January 16, 2005, 10:29:54 AM »
Here is  the formula that the blackhawk indians used to predict the total number of snowfalls for the upcoming winter...

The date of first snowfall of the season (that is a dusting or more) would be added to the age of the moon, hence snowfall total.

Example:

First snow of the season is on Nov 18th
Age of the moon (on Nov 18th)     22 days

40 snowfalls for the winter.

The local paper does the write up every year (imediately following 1st snow) and it is remarkably close!!!

Again, this was practiced in the midwest, so you guys that are getting way more than 60 snowfalls a year....???? I dont know..

I dont know. Admitadly the indians didnt pick up a free calendar at "the bank" many years ago, but would assume they did have some way of tracking days/months/years.

But I dont know.....

Since most Indians are athletic types it was probably a Sports Illustrated swimsuit calender.  I doubt they had many Mac Tool salesmen in the old days.
