I`m trying to decide between the S&W, kimber, and Springfield for a low-end or mil-spec gun. What do people think of the new S&W`s? I looked at them today at the gun store and tried the triggers on the kimbers and smiths they had no Springfields. The kimbers had the better trigger but the smith hed better sights.Triggers were close though.

Kimber and S&W DO NOT make 'low end' 1911s.

yeah, I really didn`t mean "low-end" I kind of mean with out the bells and whistles I guess. sorry. My gun dealer suggested Kimber also. He mentioned it wasn`t a colt frame. Is that true? I would like to buy some colt aftermarket parts and dress it up maybe.I do want as close to a colt as possible. But I also want a GOOD shooter. The Kimber and smith looked NICE!

Yes, that is true. The frame is slightly different from the Colt. Probably the only way this would affect you is if you decided to put on a Wilson beavertail grip safety or one with the same cut radius as a Wilson.

Other than that - everything else is pretty much interchangeable with aftermarket parts. I've done this myself, and have changed out literally everything on Kimbers.

Kimber's aren't low end? Well, ummmmmm......to ME, a standard Kimber Custom IS low end. Of course, I'm excluding the other ones out there that are lower than low end - trash and paperweights.

Is the frame on the smith&wesson 1911 exactly like a colt? Will colt 1911 grips and slide releases,grip saftey, etc... interchange with the smith?

standard 1911 grips will fit the SW1911. slide release will fit no problem.
The grip safety may require fitting however, as it activates the firing pin safety lever.
I can honestly say the SW1911 is the finest 1911 I've ever owned or shot. It's light years better than the other crap I have owned or shot.

I think I`m gonna go for the Smith; but I`m going to try to wait till I see the 2005 line up. Thanks for the replies.

Smiths are nice, but I ended up selling mine. I prefer an arched mainspring housing. When gripping fairly high, I found the combination created an annoying bind in the grip safety from the firing pin disconnector. (Didn't bother me with the flat mainspring.)

If you're considering a SW1911, then add a Colt 1991 to your options. That's what replaced my SW1911. I couldn't be happier. It has also proven to be more accurate than the SW1911.
