I have a .223 rem 14" contender barrel on order. Im very new to reloading. Looking for both factory ammo recommendations as well as recommended reloading info/tips for my upcoming Javelina hunt. I want something that I can get a good solid hit on the animal and yet not tear up too much meat.

What unit did you draw in the HAM hunt this year? I drew unit 21 for the HAM javelina hunt.

I think you will find a regular 55 grain spire point will get the job done just fine in .223 out of that 14" Contender. I am not using my 14" .223 Hunter Contender barrel this year, going with an Encore with 15" 22-250 using that same bullet and pushing it at .223 velocity. Not that it's going to perform better, but just to do it.

I got drawn for 37B, its a unit Im fairly familiar with. However, had previously been bow hunting instead. This year I wanted to put in for something different.

I have two herds that I have been keeping an eye on, have to see how the weather holds then to determine which ones I will be able to get to. I have been weathered out before by high water on crossings.

Good luck on your hunt in 37B. I may still use one of the Contenders or maybe even one of the bows. Just depend how I feel at the time.

I killed one javalina with a 14" .223 55 gr sp. Hit it in the spine. Dropped in its tracks dead. I believe it field dressed at 43 lbs. That was about 20 years ago.
