PLEASE, WE ONLY RECOMMEND HUNTING RESPONSIBLY
« Reply #1 on: January 30, 2005, 02:08:38 PM »
While I can understand your frustration I cannot recommend shooting coyotes with a 22 pistol.  I have a .22 4&5/8 in barreled Colt revolver and I have chronographed .22 LR and mag ammo.  I don't believe one can reliably, responsibly and humanely kill  coyotes with a .22 cal pistol. You lose too much power from the short barrels unless you are VERY close. I lost a large marmot shot in the upper body at about 20 yds and quit trying to take bigger game with the gun.  We hunters MUST do all we can to maintain our image of responsible, humane citizens.  Wounding any animal and letting it wander off to die in no way is acceptable in this day and age.  You like your shooting? Want to continue your enjoyment? Please show you are responsible at ALL times.

Since you have a .410, you might see how accurate your gun could shoot slugs and try that on Coyotes at close range.

Or you could invite a local varmint / fur hunter to take the coyotes off your land.  You might make a real good friend this way.

Or, if you reconsider getting another firearm, you might consider a 12 gauge,  22 centerfire rifle, or a 357 mag or larger handgun. Any of these can be much more effective and humane for reducing the coyote population. I just read that there are some new 12 gauge shells made specifically for predator hunting - check your nearest gun shop.

Good luck.

I don't normaly hunt 'youts with a Single Six, but I have taken one with my Single Six. Only difference is mine is in 32H&R mag. I used one of my Cowboy Action Shooting loads to take a 'youte in the back yard a couple months ago, 115grn RNFP LazerCast bullit over 12.3grns of BP. Punched thrue both frt shoulders and exited the animal.

Normaly I use a Savage rifle in 17HMR for 'youts. works good out to about 100yds. I would think that a 22mag hp would do a good job in the ribcage out to about 50yds from a pistol. None hit with my 17HMR have gone over about 50ft at most, and most don't get that far.

Duane - Winchester Supreme 34gr JHP .22 Magnum.  I have a Ruger New Model Single Six Stainless 5.5" barrel.  I've already taken 2 Coyotes with it since I bought it several weeks ago.  I had an Old Model Single Six 6.5" barrel before that had taken about a  dozen Coyotes with the same round.  Ranges from 25yds to 50yds.

:D Duane, as a displaced Cajun (coon___), I understand your thoughts.  At one time Winchester made a run of .22 LR ammunition known as "Power Point".  This round was supposedly originated for vermin control in Australia, and kills out of proportion for its size.  It will certainly decapitate a Fox Squirrel.  If you can locate some of these, I think they will satisfy your needs.  [/i]Laissez les bon temps roulet.  Regards.

There is a .22lr round made by Aguila(sp) that
is called the SSS or Sniper Sub Sonic. These
fire a 60 grain projectile with some pretty good
results on Coyote. The Dyna-Point in .22 mag is
also an excellent round. Both within a reasonable range
of course.  CCI is also loading the .22 WRF (not magnum)
These rounds are very accurate out of my single six.

Single Six .22 mag VS. Coyotes......
« Reply #11 on: February 09, 2005, 08:21:53 AM »
Duane,
I e-mailed back & forth with a guy on sixgunner.com that used a 6 1/2" barreled .22 mag Single Six on many coyotes as well as other critters, here's the basics of what he had to say.

1)always used FMJ bullets, because he wanted penetration.
2)all shots were 50 yards or closer, usually 30 yards.
3)aims for high shoulder shots, bit hi takes the spine, lil' low heart/lungs.
4)most coyotes need 2 shots, first puts it down, second finishes it.
5)most fox need only one shot.

When varmint calling his main gun is a .22 mag rifle with Win. Supreme 34 grn. JHP or sometimes a shotgun.  The .22 mag single six is his favorite carry gun when in the woods or used for critters that sneek up on his right side when calling w/his rifle (since he's right handed).

I hope this helps you and others (as well as myself) that are thinking about taking their .22 mag Single Sixes out after a coyote or fox.  From guys that have been there and done that many times, it seems we just need to keep the distance short and place our bullets properly!

Good luck!
Del

I've shot a bunch of coyotes with a .22 magnum, and several with my .22 magnum Single Six. It's not bad if the shots are close (I've always kept them within 40 yards, closer is better). I like the standard Winchester 40 grain hollowpoint. It just seems to do especially well out of a short pistol barrel. I like the hyper-velocity fodder, like the Winchester Supreme 34 grain hollowpoint and CCI Maxi Mag +V from a rifle. I've never lost a coyote shot with a .22 magnum, but I've always shot them in the head or throat area, and it often does take two shots. I do handgun hunt for coyotes quite a bit, even written some articles about the subject, and personally, I like service loads (like 115 grain +P 9mm hollowpoints) for coyotes out of an accurate pistol. The recoil is mild, and when that round hits a yote', he's down and out.

Even though a coyote is an irritating varmint at times, I think it is irresponsible of any hunter, especially in the not-so-friendly-to-hunters atmosphere we live in today, to say he doesn't mind to wound an animal. I know wounding is part of it sometimes, but no matter what sort of critter it is, we should always care. Not trying to step on toes here, just my thoughts.
Even without grocery stores, I won't go hungry.

Hey Duane,
I have killed a number of coyotes with a single six. Use the Winchester 40 grain JHP at a reasonable range and you wont have to worry about wounding. You will be killing.
