Picked up my first ever Handi today, now a question...

I picked up my new Handi (7mm-08) today and am pleased with it.  I have yet to shoot it, but it looks awefully good with my new Redfield scope on it.

One question...  I want a 20 gauge slug gun as well.  Should I just buy the barrel for $100 or should I buy the whole gun?  Recommendations?

You can't shoot the shot gun barrel well with the Monte Carlo style stock.  You have to either get a second stock or get a differant gun with the straight stock.  I got a 20ga barrel for my 30-06 Handi.  We use it for grouse, usually at 10 to 15 yards so we just shoot from the hip.  If they were farther away and we had to sight along the barrel we could not do it due to the high comb.

The Ultra Slugger 20 comes with a scope rail (no open sights) and would work without a problem.  A tracker II barrel probably would not work with the Monte Carlo style stock.  You could also get a non Monte Carlo stock when you got the barrel.  

Barrel fitting charge is $15 per barrel and $10 return shipping.  You also need to ship to H&R1871 so you are probably looking at $35 plus the cost of the barrel.  Gunbroker has Tracker II's in the $150 range.  The Ultra slugger runs around the same as the HandiRifles..

I bought a slightly used 20 ga tracker for $100, $20 shipped and $5 transfer.  Maybe a little high, but the smooth barrel slug is not available any more.  Plus, it is a "Whitetails Unlimited Collector".  I plan to use it, and I figured that it would run $90 to send my rifle for the Tracker II and then I would have had to buy a different stock.

Choice is yours.

I agree with Naedlaen, a barrel will cost $58 plus the fitting charge and another $20+ shipping both ways= $93+, plus the need for a different stock if you don't use a scope....

Those are great prices on the whole gun, but remember that in some areas, you can't get an internet FFL transfer done for less than $75, and a regular purchase for less than $50.  That makes a cheap rifle not such a good deal anymore.  Might as well order the barrel and stock.

the 20ga ultraslug would be a great choice.i just went for a barrel a few years back.barrel or  new gun you cant go wrong with one.my ultraslug will out shoot most handi rifles

:D , Contact Deer & Duck if you want a 20 gauge Ultra slugger w/forearm to go onto your 7mm/08 reciever, I think his is still available, a reasonable price too...

Are you still interested in a 20ga slug barrel? I purchased an 20 ga slug barrel for my frame a couple of years ago and really have never used it except to sight in my scope. I now want the scope from it to use on another project. Therefore, I'm thinking of getting rid of the slug barrel. Its the heavy barrel with wood forearm. As to a price, let me check as I do not even know what the new ones sell for now. If still interested, let me know.

Congrats on the new rifle...I think your on your way to becoming a Handi-holic quicker than you think :wink:

Go for the Ultra-Slug barrel if you want a 20 ga...they are pretty nice...but...if your finances will allow...getting a 12ga. Ultra Slug gun would be my choice...I've owned 2 of them...and there hasn't been any slug gun made that they couldn't shoot as small of groups as the more expensive ones...with the right ammo of course...they are big...and they are heavy.. and they kick more....but they throw bigger chunks of lead a bit further than the 20 gauge...but that's just my choice...and you'll have to buy the whole gun to get it in 12ga...but...onemore Handi won't hurt much  :wink:  :wink:

I appreciate all of the helpfula dvice!  To clarify, I would be mounting a scope to the gun, since I don't shoot with open sites.  I'm still kind of up in the air about the whole thing.  I guess a slug barrel would run somewhere around $100, plus shipping and handling, so I might be up in the $120 - $130 range which isn't too far removed from the cost of a new slug gun ($187).  I may just go ahead and buiy a whole new gun so I can just grab it and run when I'm ready to hunt.

You can pick up an Ultra Slug Hunter  for $176 and change thru Waly-World or a Tracker II for $126 and change.  Last time I bought a gun thru Waly-World they did not charge anything for the paper work.
