I have a question for you CAS folks.  I am about to buy a .45 Marlin 1894 Cowboy and had planned on sending it to Coyote Cap for a race gun tune up ($125 PLUS SHIPPING).  My question is this.  How would a CBC model compair to a CB that has had the "work" done on it?  Your comments are appreciated. Gary

While each individual rifle can be a bit different from the next one that comes down the pipe, I've heard that the one Marlin has slicked up still needs to be worked on.

That being said I've heard of cowboys that like either one right out of the box.  And some that didn't like either of them before going off to get worked on.

Personally, I would buy the cheaper one and send it off to Cap.  He's done two of my scatterguns and it is a world of difference:  before vs. after.

Course this is just my thinking....

Thank you C. Ranger.  That was my thinking as well.  I live in Baytown and Work in Houston.  I hope to get myself involved real soon in this fine sport.  I was thinking about observing at this months meet in Columbus.  I am reading lots of CAS material but want to have some conversations prior to purchasing equipment.

Which club do you participate in?

Thanks Gary

GGardner,
For what it's worth, I shoot a Marlin Cowboy in .357/.38, and my wife Lorelei shoots a Marlin Competition Cowboy in .38. We shoot .38s loaded to 1.5" out of both rifles.

I slicked up my Marlin using the instructions on Marauder's site:
http://marauder13.homestead.com/Rifles.html
I think it's now the equal of Lorelei's Competition Cowboy. I then installed one-piece firing pins and lighter mainsprings in both guns, and they are both slick as all get-out now. Course, they both have many thousand rounds through them now.

If you are getting the Competition Cowboy strictly for the action job, it's probably not worth it. However, you also get a Color Case Hardened receiver that is really pretty. (Don't tell Lorelei, but I'm secretly envious of how her gun looks!). I think the extra bucks are worth it just for the CCH.

One other thing to look at is barrel length. My Cowboy has a 24" barrel which I prefer (my old eyes like the front sight out as far as possible). Lorelei likes the 20" barrel of the Competition Cowboy because of the lighter weight. You pays your money and you takes your choice!

We shoot with Cheyenne Ranger out at the Texas Regulators, near Cypress/Tomball, on the fourth weekend of the month.  The website (with directions) is http://www.thetexasregulators.com/oursite_001.htm

If you want to come out for our February shoot, we'd be pleased to let you try out both our rifles, and see which one ya like better! Heck, if ya want, come on out early and we'll posse up with ya, and you can shoot our guns at the match. We could probably find some gunleather for ya (mine won't fit anyone but me and maybe Big John Wyatt :-D ). Just give me some warnin' so I can bring extra ammo!

Well L.L., thanks for the reply.  That information is worth a lot to a newcommer.  I actually did not know the competition model was 20".  I thought it was a 24" also.  Anyway, I like the longer barrel because of my equally old eyes.
I was planning on going to Columbus this month for their meeting and would like to try yours as well.  I will give you a personal message if we choose to do that.  You are very generous with your offer.  I have lots of questions.  Thanks again, Gary

Gary, we probably won't be at Columbus, 'cause I'd have to drag my lazy carcass out of bed WAY too early to get there on a Sunday morning. Don't have a camping trailer anymore, so that option is out, too.

The Texas Historical Shootist Society in Columbus are great pards, though, and we shoot with some of 'em at other clubs. If you make it out there for their shoot, I'm sure they will treat ya right!

If you want to make it out to the Texas Regulators on the fourth weekend this month (26th and 27th), my offer is still open :D . Lorelei has a test on Saturday and won't make the shoot that day, but if you decide to come out on Saturday and yell at me ahead of time, I'll be sure to bring her guns out so you can try 'em. We should both be there for the Sunday shoot.

Hope to see ya there!

I resemble that remark Laz..

Mr Gardner, although I don't shoot a Marlin as a main match rifle, it is certainly a good choice. And as these fine gentlemen before me has said, come on out and visit with us, your welcome.

And since Laz has offered to let you shoot their rifles, it's only right for me to offer you some of my ammo to shoot in their rifles :cb1:

I've got extra stuff, too.  So you'll be well heeled if you decide to join us for shooting the match not just watching.

We had several visitors last month and it appears that we wil have some more this month so you'll fit right in.  You can posse up with Lorelei, Laz, Slashwood (my brother) and me if you want to on Sunday.  We can walk you through it.

In any event, shooting or not, come on out.  It is a bunch of fun.
