Iron sights.
« on: January 16, 2005, 04:30:44 PM »
This might seem like a strange question but does anyone know of any company that makes an inline Muzzle loader with VERY VERY good Iron sights???? Our state does not allow use of any optic sights during the muzzle loader season. I can't find a rifle with sight that would enable a guy to shoot 150 yards which I have to be able to do. Prarie Deer are hard to get up closer than 100-150 yards. Sights seem to be an after thought on all rifles anymore.
shot placement is everything.

I noticed that you are about my age; and possibly have a problem with iron sights due to older eyes not being able to focus on both sights and the target at the same time. I would look for a rifle that has the ability to take a peep sight which will solve a lot of the "older eye" problems. Most of the major manufacturers have a peep sight available from Williams. I know the Lyman Great Plains has a real good peep sight (NO. 57 I believe) available as well as a hooded front sight with interchangeable blades. I have some right eye loss of focal point due to a thing my eye doctor calls "Pilots ulcer" go figure I am not a pilot. Peep sights help me to shoot longer distances more accurately than I can with open iron sights.

I HAVE A NEF HUNTSMAN,THAT SHOOTS GOODAT 100 YDS.....THE SIGHTS ARE NOT WORTH A DIME.........BUT WILLIAMS DOES SELL A PEEP SIGHT THAT LOOKS REAL GOOD.IVE GOT A PEEP ON A 54 THAT I MADE  SOME 80 YD. SHOT S  WITH BUT THE 54 WONT EVEN COME CLOSE TO SHOOTING HALF AS GOOD AS THE HUNTSMAN,I KNOW THEY ARE CHEAPER GUNS, THAN THE TC AND OTHERS BUT THEY DONT SHOOT LIKE CHEAP GUNS.........JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH........OH 1 MORE THING WITH THE PRIMER CARRIERS THEY USE IT 100 TIMES EASIER THAN MOST OTHERS........JB...

You will almost certainly have to go with after-market sights; Williams has already been mentioned and is a leading supplier of excellent sights.
I have used iron sights out to about 150 yards also; I would definitely recomment going with a peep sight and globe front.  This is the most inherently accurate setup I have found.

Thanks for the reply's. I have picked up a peep sight for my T/C Woods rifle. It was the pre Black Diamond and uses all the same perts. I need some good weather now to try it out. The Woods rifle is a very good shooter but the sights were not worth spit. I am a big NEF fan as well but have not as yet tried the Black Powder one. I hunt in North and South Dakota. ND allows the use of no magnification scopes. Now if SD would just do the same. The no scope law goes against us older shooters big time. You would think that the Game and Fish would allow scopes for old eyes. That is if the want hunters to make a good clean kill. I have a traditional Muzzle loader as well. Its a cap lock. It has very good sights but its not as handy to use as the inline.
shot placement is everything.
