New handi hard to close, is this normal?
« on: January 27, 2005, 03:19:27 AM »
As noted on another post, I just picked up my new Handi rifle in 7mm-08 yesterday and was playing around with it last night (I use the term playing cautiously, as I obviously don't play with guns).  I noticed that once you open the barrel you really have to slam it shut in order for the barrel to lock back onto the receiver.  Is this normal.  I read that you should not slam these shut because it can loosen the action.  Could it be just a matter of needing to clean the gunk (my term for the overlly oiled condition of the gun) from it since it's new?  Or, is this typical for new Handi rifles?

When I was testing these at different dealers, it didn't seem difficult to close the barrels correctly.

Ideas?

If you haven't cleaned it real well or at all...take the stock off and the barrel off...and clean the heck out of it...you probably have a-lot of the factories grease on crud up in it...making it hard to close...since it wasn't as hard at the gun shop...

You won't hurt them to close them hard, they are tougher than you think.
Clean it real good like Mac said and try again.

All of mine were hard to close when new.  It just took a good cleaning, and lots of use (break-in).  Now I can lift the forearm and close them with one finger, just like my skeet guns.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I got a new 7mm-08 yesterday as well. It closes a little harder than my well used ones but I would not call it hard. I have not given it a good cleaning yet.
shot placement is everything.

I've had a HB .243 for less than a month.  Yes, it closes hard, but it's getting better.  As someone else said, take the stock off and give it a good cleaning.  I sprayed out the receiver with a generous amount of Gun Scrubber.  In addition to the grease/oil the factory puts on the gun, you'll get out a ton of metal particles.  After cleaning the gun, I think lubricating the sides of the ejector with help the action close easier (and the ejector work better).  I use RemOil for that purpose.
