Need Clarification on SN/rebarrel
« on: January 29, 2005, 09:34:13 AM »
Quickdtoo,

I must be confused and do not want to mislead/or confuse others with my lack of knowledge. I copied the info below from H&R's websight.
 Barrel Accessory Program

Additional barrels may be added to firearms of our manufacture since 1987 only, with a serial number that begins with N or H. We do not install additional barrels on any other manufacturer’s firearms.
Additional barrels are available as additional barrels only. We will not exchange barrels for existing barrels on shotguns and rifles, as it will change the model.
Rifle frames may be fitted with additional rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader barrels.
Shotgun frames may be fitted with additional shotgun and muzzleloader barrels only.
We do not sell additional barrels outright. All barrels must be factory fitted.

now if I read this right the serial numbers that begin with N or H are good to go for most of the barrels in the program including the ones with the * The reason they want you to call is if you have an older model "before 1987" that you want to rebarrel. and maybe for a bull barrel going onto a regular forarm that you would have to incure more expense to buy the larger forarm.

I am not trying to start confusion just trying to end mine.  Thanks dan'l

There's another variable in the mix, notice the barrels with the * by them in the accessory barrel list? Those barrels can only be fit to certain frames and the only way to know for sure is to call em or email them you serial number.....then you'll know for sure.

I have a Topper frame with a HTXXXXXX serial number...using the criteria of H or N, this frame should fall in the SB2 category, but it doesn't cuz I emailed em and they knew it was an SB1 not an SB2, would only fit shotgun barrels to it.....I also have an SB2 frame with an HTXXXXXX serial number and they did fit a .45-70 barrel to it..... so the number and prefix has more meaning than we are aware of.

Quick
None of the Toppers will be fitted with high pressure rifle barrels.  They are too old.  There must be some sort of recycling of the letters.  In addition, HT might stand for "Topper" models only.  Never seen a "T" in the lineup.  The asterisk, almost without exception, is meant for pre '96 models.  I have seen older rifles, chambered for 243 that they would not fit a 308 barrel to.  When I asked them about this, I was told that each receiver was pressure tested (so they said) with the caliber of barrel it was sold wth and only pistol cartridges and low pressure rifles barrels would be fitted.

Well, I know that, I stated that.....I have an SB2 frame that I bought from BBF, SN HT332XXX, the Topper I bought from him is a 2003 model SN HT294XXX...go figure, that's why I said the numbers have to mean something to them, it's not just the alpha prefix. :wink:

T=2003

Is there a list of serial numbers and manufacture date?

Look at the 2nd letter of the serial number.
(I'm pretty sure 1995 is J, 1994 H, etc)

K=1996
L=1997
M=1998
N=1999
P=2000
R=2001
S=2002
T=2003
You're looking for N or later if you want to be able to order the barrels marked with an asterisk on the accessory barrel page.

Too old???? What are you smokin??? :-D  The Topper is a currently available option from H&R!!!

I'm thinkin someone is too old, but it ain't the Topper!!! :P

The serial numbers are not that big of a mystery.  All serial numbers of guns made since 1987 will begin with either an 'N' for New England Firearms or an 'H' for Harrington & Richardson.  This is when the company reformed after their last bankruptcy.  The present company will not fit any barrels to receivers made by the 'old' company. SB2 receivers made between 1987 and 1998 are not as hard as those made from 1999 to present,  therefore those guns will only be fitted with low pressure caliber barrels.  As stated above the second letter of the serial number denotes year of manufacture, 1999 ='N', 2000 = 'O' and so on.   Easy hugh? :grin:

Daniel, The best advice is call or email H&R to find out what barrels can be fitted to your frame, then you'll know without a doubt.
