Birdshead vaqueros
« on: January 26, 2005, 08:20:37 AM »
Howdy  folks, I'm just starting out here and I was all hot and heavy on getting vaqueros with the above mentioned grips, but have recently been lead to believe that standard grips might be a little better for fast shoot'n and target acquisition. Any thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated.  Both fit my hand well, but I just love the look of the birdshead.  Thanks :D

This is the kind of thing you really have to try for yourself. Some people find the BH grips work for them very well and very fast. Others find that the BH grip is totally unsuitable.

In general, if you have a medium sized hand the BH grip seems to do ok. People with small hands find them too think and people with big  hands find them too small top to bottom.

If they fit ok, the key to speed is practice.

I purchased the first one I saw and have enjoyed it ever since - prof's words of wisdom about practice are sound advise for sure.  I don't shoot CAS, I just use it to carry in the field and for plinking - I like the way it comes up on target, shoots to the point of aim and handles recoil. Practice with anything you get for sure.

Thanks gentlemen, I guess I'm gonna wait till the new vaqueros come out and see what they feel like.  I know if I jump on one of the older ones, I'll find out later that the new ones fit great. Anyone have any Ideas when these will be readily available?  Thanks again.

The new Vaqueros are available now, in the larger stores.  Smaller stores won't get their allotments until April, in some cases I know of.  Going price seems to be in the $420 range around Portland, OR, about $40 more than the old Vaqueros sell for around here.  45 Colt seems to be the only available chambering around here.

Do not use the heavy loads listed for Ruger handguns in the new 45 Colt Vaqueros.  The cylinders apparently have thinner walls, and will not tolerate those +P loads like the old Rugers built on the big Blackhawk frame.  I have not yet measured the cylinders myself, but playing it safe sounds like a good idea.

Toecutter, I don't know if a standard grip frame will help you shoot faster, maybe so.
But, you did say you liked the way the birdshead frame looks. I have a safe full of guns that I like the way they look, not because they make me faster(I need a gatlin gun for that)... :)
Shoot what makes you grin the widest.

I use a pair of BH Vaqueros, and love them. They are pretty fast for me, a lot faster than my plow handled colt. I think the factory grips are a bit fat in the palm, but that can be fixed. They work good in traditional, but I like them duelist too. DM
