Is there such a thing???
« on: January 21, 2005, 08:41:47 AM »
Is there such a thing as a barrel being shot out? I hear this phrase once in awhile.  I take this to mean that no matter what you do to try to turn the rifle into a shooter....it jus' ain' happening.  Being kind of new to the world of surplus rifles, C & R and the like, I was wondering if this is true.  If so, how can you tell if a barrel is in fact "shot out" without actually shooting it.  I like a gun to have some reasonable accuracy and am trying to avoid buying somebody else's piece of junk.  Any advice??  Thanks, Ambush

Barrel worn beyond service?

Yes,a barrel can be worn beyond accurate usage.Whether shot excessively or not cleaned or cared for properly or a cimbination of any of these.
Average estimated life of a military barrel is 10,000 rounds. That's just shooting.Other factors can reduce barrel life.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

Any rifle that gets shot rapid-fire to the point of over-heating can be "shot out".  Throat erosion, corrosive primers, intermittent yet vigorous cleaning are causes of being "shot out".  Milsurp guns may have been subjected to such treatment more than sporting rifles.  The wear caused by passage of bullets throught the bore is much less a cause.  I had a M1 Garand that had a reasonably good looking bore, a little "frosty", but strong rifleing.  It just wouldn't shoot straight.  :(

You would be supprised at bores that would not shoot and looked  rounded on the edges of the rifleing. A couple of cleanings with one of the battery/electric solution bore cleaners made them nice and crisp on the rifleing, shiny again ect. It does not hurt to try this type of cleaning before condemning the barrel to the scrap heap. Jim

As inexpensive as Mil-Surps are now, You can re-barrel
one of the actions for much less than a modern rifle would cost you.
I have also found that a rifle that no longer shoots its standard
size projectile very well because of wear can be brought back to life
with slightly larger diameter cast bullets.
