223 vs 22mag
« on: January 24, 2005, 04:25:51 AM »
What are the differences in the two rounds as far as ballistics and such. I understand that one is a rimfire and the other a centerfire, but what are the "shooting" differences??
Thanks
Jeff

They are very different rounds.

According to Winchester:

A/ .223 40 gr. Supreme Ballistic Tip = 3700 FPS & 1216 '/lb energy (muzzle)

B/ .22 WMR 40gr.JHP = 1910 FPS & 324 '/lb energy (muzzle)

The .223 has almost twice the velocity and four times the energy of a .22 mag.   I've got both and there is no comparison.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

If you reload you can download the 223 to 22 mag velocities using blue dot powder.

FWIW the ranch I go hog hunting on has a care taker that uses a .22 mag for cleaning up wounded hogs. He says that's all he needs and it always does the job for him. That's in Fla. BTW.

Jeffrey8mm, depending on what it was offered to you for it might be a good gun for you. I use one for my 100 yard and under coyote gun for carrying through the Maine woods on snowshoes. It is outfitted with a survivor stock and Red Dot sight and it works great!!! From Wal Mart A new .22 Mag Sportster is $103.62 and a .22 Mag Ultra Varmit is $134.?? If he offered the gun at a good price I say buy it!!! Mine shoots one inch and under groups at 100 yards with Winchester silver and black box ammo as well as CCI Maxi Mag and almost as well with Federal 50 grain HP's. It will not shoot the 50 grain CCI Gold Dots or the CCI Maxi-Mag+V's at all, looks like a shotgun!!!. Don't dismiss the caliber because it's a rimfire, it does very well on the proper game animals as long as the shooter does his part. And the solids really have a lot of penetration also....<><....

Thanks MSP.  Heres the skinny on the whole deal.  I bought a 223 handi to use on coyotes and crows and such. Here in Gods land of Mississippi   the shots I should have on yotes will be about like shots on my deer.  125yds MAX with 75 yds being more the norm.  The 223 is too small for deer, or so I am told, so I thought of parting with it and shooting a 22 mag for a while.  While the cost of ammo is not an issue between the 2 the mag is cheaper to shoot, hence more trigger time. Some will say dont do it I know, but I really wonder sometimes why it was I bought the 223.  Oh yeah, it is that hondi holic thing some of you guys have, but I dont have it so it couldnt have been that!!!
FWIW the 22 mag is a Marlin bolt gun!
