Obtaining A Curio & Relic License/ How?

What kind of hoops does one have to jump through to obtain one? I got my dad interested in one, and with my growing interest in mil-surps it is probably a worthwhile investement. Tired of expensive background checks and dealer fees. I checked out the ATF website and see thet it costs $30 for 3 years, but how do you apply, and how do you get it? Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Give them a call, the toll-free number for the BATF+E is 1-866-662-2750 and ask for the forms to be sent to you.
When they arrive, fill them out per the instructions. SEND one copy to your local sheriffs office or chief of police which ever has the juristiction and the other back to Atlanta with your check for $30. Then comes the wait, anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months or more.

Seems to me if memory serves me correct you had to have the local cops sign the form and then  you send it in. At least that is what I did. Jim

I went to ATF Online in the Forms section there is an application it tells you how to print it out.  Just follow the instructions my local police chief had no clue about it I think i was the first one ever in my town.  I added a copy of my "State Consealed Carry Permit" too.  

There is a down side to it though your going to be broke all the time like no mad money!!!!  I haven't been without gas money yet I'm not that bad but it could happen at anytime we C&R guys just never know. (kidding)  Take it slow and be very picky on what you buy so just don't buy anything buy the affordable "nice condition stuff" like stuff you'll keep for ever and be happy with.  At times you'll find yourself like a kid in a candy store with a $1 when i'm like that i walk away if i'm not sure so shop by your first gut feeling.  Check the bores,  then the numbers(match), then the condition of the stock and the bluing then sum it all up and see if the price is worth it.  This you will have to be quick at gun shows to get the good buys.  Just remember the search is most of the fun!!!!  Enjoy!!! :-D

Didn't work that way for mine (I've had it for around 10 months now).  I've never even talked to the local sheriff (strange since I work for the county government.  Sheriff's office is very near my building).  Just filled out the paperwork and sent a copy to his address.  Took about 6 weeks for my liscense to arrive.

If anyone needs the forms I'd be happy to email them.

Maybe they changed it as I have had mine for going on 5 years or maybe I just read it wrong and had them sign it and then I sent it in. Either way I got my license with out any problems. Jim

Its basically just a simple, one-page form.  Name, rank, SSN (don't even go there!).  I called the number and the package arrived in 2 or 3 days.  You fill it out and send to ATF in Atlanta with a check for $30 (good for 3 yrs.) You also have to fill out a one-page certification of citizenship status.  

Then, fill out a second copy of the form and send to your local law enforcement CEO.  This is simply a notification to them that you have applied for a C&R license and informs them that they can contact ATF IF they have info that would prevent you from qualifying.

You will have to  keep good records on firearm transactions and are subject to inspections.

IMO, the best thing about this is that you now qualify for 'dealer' pricing from most retailers, not only for C&R firearms but also ammo, components, etc.  Plus the convenience of having it shipped direct to your location.

That's the truth.  I've bought 7 guns with my license in the last 10 months (so I saved $140 in transfer fees ), but I think I've probably saved even more in discounts from Midway .
