Reloading for the BAR
« on: February 06, 2003, 06:02:34 AM »
I recently picked up a BAR lightweight .308. It shot my 150 gr. IMR4350 reloads very well. Is their any suggestions for a cleaner load.

        Thanks, animal

Howdy, Animal!

Reloading for the gas operated semi autos can be a bit tricky.  Gas port pressures, bullet weights, and burning rate of powders all affect operating characteristics.

As a rule, they work best with medium burning rate powders and medium weight bullets in that caliber.

For cleaner burning, I would use a faster powder, say IMR 3031, 4895, or 4064 with that 150 grain bullet.

You might try monitoring/measuring case ejection paths.  By documenting the distance and angle that cases are ejected, you can get an idea of bolt velocity and consistency.

Best wishes on developing a cleaner burning load.

Thanks John,

That is exactly what I needed to hear. I hadn't thought of measuring the ejection angle. Good idea. I guess I'll try some 3031 as I,m also loading up some 30-30's . 8)
