.44 mag recoil??
« on: January 29, 2005, 02:41:38 PM »
Hello,
I am thinking of getting a handi in 44 mag and putting a youth stock on it for my 11 year old to deer hunt with.  For those of you that have them, would that be too much recoil?  Is there a better choice for an under 100 yard gun for a kid??
Thanks in advance!
Jason

My 44 mag. has very little recoil, not much more than my 223,but when you start using the max loads in gets a little more recoil. But even with hot reloads with the 300 gr. XTP's it should not be to much for a smaller person. When he gets a little bigger ream it to 445 super mag or 444 and it will be even better.   Digger

The 44 mag hot 240 grain loads recoil about as much as a 30-30. I have not shot any 180 grainers, but I expect they would have less recoil. I would recommend the 44 mag - other choices would be the 30-30 or .243.

There is almost no recoil with the 200 Grain Hornady. That and 240 grain cast bullets are all I have shot much in the Handi 44 Mag.
shot placement is everything.

You might also try shooting some 44 Specials as I would think they would have less recoil. Stay away from the hot or +p loadings.

I found the Blazer ammo to be pretty user friendly. I don't care for an hour or two of full housee 240 grain bulletsts, most of which will travel at 1700 fps or so, it's a pretty hard thump, but in the end no worse than any other chambering worthy of being callen a deer cartridge. I think it will serve your 11 year old well, as well as any 243 or 30-30, and has been mentioned, it has the advantage of being able to chamber 44 Specials which will give some very low recoil practice and build confidence in the youngster in the rifel and their ability ot shoot it well. A 243 or 30-30 can be intimidating to some youths.
