Lee Liquid Alox/Dried up......reconstitute?
« on: April 21, 2005, 05:18:40 AM »
I have been using this stuff for a few years.  If it is on the shelf for a while, it gets too thick to use.  I recently bought another Lee sizer for my 8mm, and the bottle they sent was already too thick too come through the nozzle.  Does anyone know what is the solvent that is used with this stuff, or what to use to thin it to proper consistency?  I tried mineral spirits last week.  It seems to work, but I don't know what effect the lube will have in my barrel.

Robert,

I don't know what to add but when mine got too stiff, I heated it up took the bottle cap off to dip some out with a screwdriver. I used to add a little Lyman super moly to mine to make it a little stiffer and would have to heat it up to use it. I would microwave it on high a few seconds.

Are you sure it was "too thick" and not just a plugged nozzle? I have to run a toothpick thru the bottle nozzle on a regular basis.

what you need to do is.
Take a old coffee cup and fill it about 3/4 full with water and put it in the microwave ant bring ti to a boil. then you drop your bottle of alox in top down for about 5 minutes then turn it over and do the same for the botton.

If you still can not get it to come out the nozzle just put it back in the water for a few minutes and use a straightened paper clip to unclog it.

Robert,
I've used mineral spirits to thin mine and it worked just fine.  It didn't have any adverse effects on the lube quality.
Best,

We talking BEER or wiskey? :)  :)

BEER ya that be ok but wiskey might just be cheaper to buy a new bottle.

I think he ment a new bottle of alox, Beers cheap and it just isn't worth it to waste good whiskey. Now that its settled lets all have a shot of Woodford Select Kentucky Bourbon and use rubbing alcohol in or alox. :)

Mineral spirits.

Better minds than mine went into this a year or two ago and determined that Lee's Liquid Alox is Alox 350 thinned with mineral spirits. A couple of them even wrangled samples from the maker and made their own. If any of you work for car dealerships, the stuff is more commonly used as undercoating.

Alox 350 is sometimes available in five gallon buckets at a few of their distribution points, but it's generally sold in 55 gallon drums. I looked into buying some, but the shipping would ruin me.

Anyway, it having to be blended and the volatility of the mineral spirits explains the varying consistencies we get. If I ever lay my hands on ALOX 350, I'll do my blending outside with a yard sale mixer because of flammability.

If it's used as undercoating, what's it called? What's the brand name or how do you identify it?                        Woodbutcher

I have used mineral spirits & this does a good job of thinning the product.

I believe it is printed on the bottle that this is the accepted thinner.

"LEE liquid Alox" is in fact Alox 606-55

Alox 606-55 is 55% Alox 606 and 45% mineral spirits, for thinning (or the other way around).

Alox 606 is a rust preventative. One use is for rustproofing cars. Works fine for bullet lube, as we all are aware of. It has been reported that it can be melted with beeswax for a lubesizer machine.

Alox 350 is another product. Don't know it's original use but is said to replace 2138F in NRA 50/50 Alox/Beeswax bullet lube.

I have made bullet lube with beeswax and both of the products above, but not tested as my Star is newly filled with Javelina.

Both product are manufactured by Lubrizol.com Visit their homepage.

I went to Lubrizol.com and could not find any info on Alox type lubricants.  I did a search on their site and no such products as Alox 606-55 was found.

Where should on look for further info/

Hi Harold,

You won´t find much information here, but maybe you could email Lubrizol for more info and a MSDS. Use their search function for Alox 350, I don't think you will find any.
Best search result would probably be by doing a Google search for the products, that's how I learned the original use for Alox 606-55.
(By the way - Alox 606-55 is not listed as a lubricant)

I simply use charcoal lighter, which is commercially known as "Low Odor Petroleum Solvent" aka mineral spirits without the smell.

The paper I got with the Lee sizer said to use mineral spirits, or to heat it in hot water to thin it. As stated before, mineral spirits is the stuff to use.

Mineral Spirits to reconstitute.  Put a little in your tumbling tub and scrape the dried on lube with a knife add some bullets - the stuff will turn liquid again.

I thin with denatured alcohol though. The alcohol flashes off quicker and the bullets dry in less time than using mineral spirits.
