What if you needed a military weapon for home defense to protect your home/country? ( Were closer to Korea than anyone ot there!)

What would you purchase in the way of caliber, action type and cost?

Sorry don't like the .223, hunted for 2 years in south east asia and it is not the best choice.

Though I already have the best battle rifle ever conceived, that being the M1, I do have an SKS.  It is one nifty little battle rifle.  It is much more user friendly than the M16 and ammunition is readily available.

Remember "KISS"-----enough said!

Now where did I put those stripper clips??!!
I am, therefore, I think.

Well I also own a sks....mine is a yugo.I must say they are a pretty decent gun for what they were made for.Mine has been very reliable, shoots cheap and plentiful ammo..,and is acurate enough for any situation around here....I might also consider an AK-47.....I have one on lay-away,but have yet to actually fire one or really get used to one..,but there rep is extremly good..,but I dont have to tell you that.lol
Also anything in7.62x54R would be handy....most russian surplus ammo is steel core....which could have its uses....,but anyway those are my thoughts.....lets hope we never actually have to experience how good are thoughts really were!

I would probably grab my M1 carbine. That 110gr HP mucho improves the effectiveness as compared to the ball load. I would have to give serious consideration to grabbing the SKS as I headed out the door just for the fact that that will probably be the load the visiting team will probably be bringing along, might be able to put some of that "captured" ammo to good use..... :-D

The best home defense weapon is a 12ga shotgun w/"00" buck nothing comes close you don't have time to aim and be exact you just have to point and shoot. I hope ity never comes to that but it is better to be ready.

Weapon for Home/Country Defense
« Reply #5 on: January 11, 2003, 05:02:37 AM »
A military weapon for home defense for home/country, eh?

Audy Murphy liked the M1 Carbine for house-to-house, and is still a good choice for home as is the 12 gauge shotgun.

For home and country, I would choose an M1A with 18 1/2" barrel and kevlar/graphite synthetic stock, the new Aimpoint sight (we use them on our M4s - they're great. Long battery life too), or a short version FN FAL.

The SKS is a nifty el cheapo rifle if worked over a bit.  I once made an SKS into a decent carbine by removing the bayonet/bayonet attach stuff, front and rear sights, and cutting the barrel back and threading it for an M16A2 flash supressor. Fabricated a pedistal mount  dovetailed for an M14 Front sight. The mount butted against the front portion of the gas cylinder. For a rear sight, I used a 1903A3 aperture attached to the rearmost portion of the Bolt Carrier Housing. Stuck it in a plastic stock. Nice rifle. The trigger is the biggest drawback to the SKS, but due to the design, there's not much one can do except get used to it.

Definately my SKS.....
« Reply #7 on: January 11, 2003, 06:01:28 AM »
....and if cheap ammo dries up, I have lots of brass and dies with expander balls for .311 and .308, so I can use whatever bullets are readily available.  I have used .308 bullets  from 110-220 gr with excelllent results. My el-cheapo SKS is the straightest shooting rifle I have ever seen with iron sights.
....make it count

A lot of good points.
« Reply #10 on: January 11, 2003, 06:36:45 PM »
There are many good points to the original post.

I already have an extra, matt finish 870 that only needs a good barrel with a ghost ring site for close up work. Found a pistol grip stock on Ebay to watch.

For even closer work I have a Springfield Arms 1911, .45 ACP and 300 rounds of ammo.  Got to get the reloading stuff back out and build up the supply!

I like the idea of hitting them from afar.  I am too old to carry around a lot of ammo and I do like to hunt! NEF is making a .223 in stainless.  It could easily be taken apart and carried in a pack with a scope.  But as reported in Afganistan, the enemy over there sometimes need a few extra hits.  As Jeff Cooper suggested, maybe the .243 would have been a better choice for the military.

The M14 I used at Ft. Dix. and loved it! I could regurally hit the 500 yard targets and boy was it reliable.  Then they gave me a M16 and I could not hit crap with it. When I got to Nam they asked me what weapon I wanted and I told the old supply clerk an M14, "snicker". Shot guns and handguns were for officers so I settled on a M79 grenade launcher and lots of HE, WP and buckshot. Used to kill a lot of Peacocks for dinner with that thing.

Maybe a new forum could be home defense tactics and readiness!  :excuseme:

I'll give everyone a hint today:  Never do the same thing 2 days in a row in a combat situation. We had 2 guys in the company park their vehicle in the same place for 2 days.  On day three there was a booby-trapped 105 round in a roadside stand right there.  Neither of them ever required any medical attention, dead on the spot.

Humans are creatures of habit, in combat don't have any!

I still like the 12ga 3" magnum shells "00" buck its like a whole magazine of 9mm's coming at you at the same time with one shot not good to be on the recieving end but sure down right effective in dispatching bad guys quickly when its case of survival. The Hakim or Torkarev(heavy hitters) is my second choice (outside) the sks would be my last choice.                                          BigBill

Just food for thought or is rounds for defense?

Years ago I got a Chinese SKS for $169.00.  Very accurate, and never missed a lick in several hundred rounds.   Hardly any recoil. Only problem was the stock was way to short for me and I added a little rubber pad.  Ammo is cheap, light weight and easy to store.

Got bored, cleaned it and put it away some where.  Why do we spend so much more time and effort on our "problem child" rifles that will not shoot right without blood, sweat and tears?

We can what if all day long.  But since most of the military/terroist forces that we will have to contend with will be the ones that still utilize the AK-47.  It would be my first choicemostly b/c it has a distinctive sound I would much rather sound like them in a guerilla warfare situation.  However, having made that comment, I must qualify it further by stating the I would personally have to chose the same type weapon as my foe for many purposes that I do not believe I have to elaborate on here.  Not given that option I go for quality (accuracy) over quantity.  One Shot One Kill!!!!!

I must say that I agree 100% with BigBill on the 870 with 3" magnum 00 buck.  I have used it that since purchasing my 870 Express.  #8's your just urinating up a rope.  The Marines use them in the Embassy so they do not penetrate the walls and kill some diplomat.  If someone is trying to kill me in my house, forget the walls,  I can patch the holes with a little bit if mud and a drywall knife.  I also love the thought of a belt fed 1100 wonderful idea.

Whoa, Sorry guys, I have to disagree with the 223 in a modern AR configuration. It is a great gun. I agree it is disliked by a lot of Vets and  respect that opinion, because they got some bad ones, but the rifle has changed. I have never had a jam nor a mis-feed, but I do keep it clean! Ammo is still cheap, but I agree that neither is as cheap as an SKS and ammo...NOW...if you guys can read, the visiting team won't be carrying AK's and such. They won't be coming through Alaska or Georgia or Alabama, They're already here! Mr Ridge and his Home Defense team called good ol US Army et al,(Including NATO troops) will be knocking. Constitution states that US Troops can't fire on US Citizens or somthing like that. It change with a signature when our leaders this we're unsafe and unruly. Do you really think the Brady Bill Gestapo is tossing all the instant checks? Look what they're doing in VA with the so called 'tips' about the DC snipers. Innocent people are losing thier guns right before our eys. How many of you guys are hearing about that on TV or in the paper? I saw it only once, and it wasn't a headline. No sir, the visiting team is already here. They can dry up the 7.62x39 in a heartbeat--pack it away now. As for me, I see how dependable and accurate the AR-15 is every week at the DCM Hi-Power shoots. Look what wins Camp Perry now, and those boys shoot 600 yds. Yeah, they'er special heavy bullets for the 600yd stuff, but your factory SKS doesnt do real well at 600 either. Surplus 30rd GI mags are all around and cheap. A guy can carry 10 or 15 mags real easy. If you need more in your present fire-fight, you have real problems in your neighborhood. My other choice is my Cetme 308. I have extra maggies for it, and alot of ammo. I shoot Hi-poer with a M1A also, but it is a little heavy to tote unless it's an emergency, but I would not feel undergunned with either. My 12 PUMP Riot is next to my bed!  Nope, when I gotta scoot and shoot, it's with my AR and my M92 and 5 hi-caps. I hope I didn't offend anyone with this opinion, but keep watching the news and the erosion or your 'RIGHTS', especailly the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. BTW-they won't be coming for mine, I sold every one except my shot-gun, and that fell in the lake duck hunting! Take care, and good hiding. This post is probably being watched, so I have to go prepare for the black helicopters tonight!

TopGun, you have made some very good points about the "enemy" already being here.  A couple of more points that I feel obligated to make mention of as well is that the AK-47 is the most devastating round ever made due mostly to the bullet design and yaw.  Also no one here has chosen the 9mm (NATO's choice), for home/country defense.  The 9mm was designed by the Germans to wound not kill opposing forces.  If you kill one soldier then you take one soldier out of action if you wound one you take 7 or more out of action.  The ONLY reason I would ever use much less own a 9mm would strictly be for the availability of ammunition.  Have a good day and remember..........

Indoors - anything I can get my hands on but usually a 45 or a 357.  If I can get to the shotgun it is either an 1100/870 or a side by side coach gun.

Outdoors - an 1100/870 for around the corner of the house, or AK - 47 or any bolt with a scope for longer range.

Followed up appropriately with an out of control two ton Ford Bronco in 4 WD assault mode and studded snows.  Mikey.

You might want to change your way of thinking. Studded tires are only legal part of the year.  A really good mud grabbing tire or radial snows will be as effective when you run over someone.

Also remember a good skid plate!!!!  Would not want transmission problems on the get-a-way!:D
