:cb2: Almost lost a job once because of a hearing test. Enough damage has already been done. At the range or shooting out in the woods I wear ear plugs and muffs. Even if I'm only shooting a .22 pistol. (Just the plugs if all I have is a .22 rifle.)

When hunting I use the Peltor Tactical muffs that amplify sound (I need that!) and then dampen anything loud. They work great AND keep your ears warm! Plus they're the behind your head kind that allows me to wear that good old Gus with a wide brim to keep the rain or snow off. (But then, we haven't seen any snow down here in 3-4 years, though we had some ice this past Christmas.)

Protect your hearing guys. It cost very little to save it. It costs a fortune to try to get it back!

I shot in competition for many years and I am now quite
hard of hearing in my right ear as a result. I could not hear the range master so I left the plug loose in that ear. The audiologist asked me
after she tested me if I was a shooter. I was kind of curious as to how
she knew. She said that there was certain frequencies that shooters could
not hear because of the repedative gunfire. I could hear none of them
so she knew I had been shooting for a while. I do not wear hearing protection while hunting, But I will not pap a cap otherwise without protection.

Does anyone make earmuff protection that doesn't squeeze ur brains out? One's I have really are uncomfortable......

I always use hearing protection, ear plugs while hunting, and muffs while practicing. I have hearing loss in my left ear from shooting a .44 mag without protection when I was 16 -- my ears felt like they were clogged for 2 weeks; also, from driving a Jeep for 8 years with the windows down and the air rushing by on the left side. When I took my hearing test at boot camp, they asked me if I was trying to go home! HA!HA! I use the kind you can buy at Wal-Mart for $12. They are a silicone or rubber material with a diaphram that allows you to hear normal sounds, but blocks the report of the gun. Cheap, but they work. I have shot several deer with handgun and rifle while wearing them, and have never had my ears hurt or ring afterwards -- if that's a true indication of no damage being done.

poncaguy, I have a pair of Peltor Ultimate10 with a NRR of 29 or 30. I also wear glasses, but they're not uncomfortable. I do have to readjust my glasses periodically, though.

My hearing is shot, for many reasons. My wife bought me a set of Walker Quads, they are great, you tune them in so at the range you can have a conversation and still be protected. They claim (other owners) you can hear leaves fall!! while hunting.
