check picture and read Please...

so I pick up the VLS in .308 today. I took pictures(ofcourse) and happened to take one from the front. I see something I didnt notice before, so I grab my mini mag and sure enough, I see brown marks at the muzzle end, only about 1/4" in length, and they just stop. You can see from the pic that they dont travel up the barrel.

I dont remember seeing this before in rifles I had, but to be honest, I cant say I ever checked them or looked for such a marking.

what could have caused this and should I return it or wont it matter? The rifling itself looks great, its just those patterns of brown marks. It rubbed at it with a cotton swab and its clean, nothing came off.

I wont be shooting it until this weekend sometime. Im wondering if I should even bother incase it voids the return policy.

any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Looks like copper fouling from the test loads.  Get a good copper solvent and a good bronze brush.  Should clean up ok.

thanks for the fast reply Greg. should I let the hoppes bench rest solvent sit just at the end of the barrel and soak for a while? Ive never seen this at just the end of the muzzle, odd.

Definitely copper. I use a combination of JB Bore Paste and Barnes CR10 to remove bad copper fouling.

I love you guys, I love this place!

I was ready to run back to the store and bitch up a storm. Im surprised remington wouldnt clean that out after test loads. Ive had 3 Rems in the past 15 years and I dont ever recall seeing this.

Ive got Hoppes bench on it now. I also have JB that I picked up today. Im willing to try anything right now.

thanks a lot guys, you make a new member feel real welcome  :D

I cant wait to shoot this baby!!

after some shooters choice and JB, it came out. It was slow going but im sure the accuracy I gain will be well worth it. Thanks again fellas, much appreciated.  :D

sighted her in today and the accuracy is insane but....

cleaning her real good right now but that copper fouling is at the same spot, and only there again. Its coming out a lot easier than it did 2 days ago, but is this normal?

I shot about 25 rounds today, cleaning every 5 or 6 rounds. Not a great cleaning mind you, a quick patch with shooters choice then a bore snake run thru. I thought this would prevent the fouling at the muzzle.

will this always happen?
My other Rem rifles did NOT do this. But this is by far the most accurate Ive ever owned.
