New Savage 93R17!
« on: March 17, 2006, 02:01:09 AM »
Just went in to loo around yesterday a the local gun shop and see what I came out with. It is the new 93R17 Savage 17HMR with the Accutrigger  I topped it off with a Tasco Target/Varmint 10-40x50mm scope. I cant wait until I can break the barrel in and see what she will do.  Mr crow, look out!

statelinerut, I have the same rifle ( I Love it I love it) there no jackrabbit  safe when I use my Savage 17HMR. I like the 20 grain xtp by Hornady but will be trying the 17 grain bullet real soon. I have taken a couple of fox with the 17 HMR with no problems.... :D

I've got the 93R17 BVSS.  I tried the 20 grain on crows and didn't get much expansion.  Even the 17 grain bullets don't vaporize them like a .243 but the crows should still have fear of it!  The .17HMR is a very fun round.....enjoy!

I agree, my heavy barreled marlin kicks butt...
But I haven't heard of many savages that were all that terrible...you could always try re-crowning and making sure the barrel is floating, and action is bedded properly.
Seems like the savages are the more popular HMR right now. The accutrigger is sweet, by all means.

I posted a trigger trick for marlins here a few months back...check it out if you haven't already.

My Savage had the old trigger that I replaced with a Rifle Basix and with the 17 grain ammo was outstanding.  It was like shooting a laser.  The 20 grain stuff opened up to about 2 1/2 inches at 100 yards.  When I bought it the 20 grain wasn't available.  Now I have a Contender barrel in HMR, actually one 14 inch pistol barrel and one rifle barrel, and have only shot 17 grain in them.

Yes i did the trigger job on my marlin and it worked great and it shoots great to, i did the trigger job on my savage it made it liter but didnt help the groups any, my uncle just bought a savage heavy barrel  left handed bolt with accu-trigger i didnt care to much for the trigger like a to stage trigger got all that creap before you get to the real trigger but once u get the creap out of it to the real trigger it is sweet nice and light trigger pull that kinda gun would be ok for target shooting but not for hunting ,in my eyes any way, over on rimfire central  a guy had trouble with a savage he sent it in to savage and the shipped the same gun back to him and TOLD him that the gun liked 20gr ammo and thats what he needed to shoot in the gun , all be dammed if i am going to have some gun company tell my what ammo i have to shoot in my gun if u have to use what they rekamend in my eyes THAT gun is JUNK
