rem.7400-slow burning powders ok?

posted similar on 2 other areas of board.is it ok to use slow burning powders such as imr/h4831,reloader 19/22,4350.have read before that you need to use certain powder burn rates in the fast to medium burn rate for reliable functioning,and to not wreck the rails,action,gas system,etc...im getting one in 270win.gonna be loading 130gr.bullets,110gr.v-maxs for coyotes,etc...also do you need small base dies?have heard some say yes/no

Well, I'm not a reloader so you don't have to trust my opinion. But, an educated guess states that since a 7400 relies on the gas from an exploding powder charge, that a slow one isn't too great of an idea. It might work, but the slow release of gas could cause it to cram or jam or whatever. Just my :money:

On your question about the powder to use in your 7400 rem. I do think you will get the best results with a slower powder like 4831. or 4350.
And yes to the small base die, You might get away with a standard die but i wouldent chance it. I have seen the case where a person used a standard die and in the heat of the battle the round wouldent feed and he was in a smere,Bad day in camp. I have a 7400 in .308 Winchester and am loading 150 gr. Sierra Gamekings, using Reloader 15.  I found that the gun was sensitive to seating depth; when I hit it right, the groups shrank by half.  So far, I have seen no cycling problems or jamming and there doesn't seem to be a great amount of crud build-up in the mechanism.

Go with small-base dies right out of the gate.  I full-length sized with a regular sizing die at first but the first round out of the gun was always a flier.  After switching to small-base, that problem went away and the gun consistently shoots near 1" @ 100 yards, which ain't half bad for an automatic...
