Having trouble getting used to Encore...
« on: January 31, 2005, 06:23:01 AM »
Ijust got this Rifle recently. When I try to shoot from the bench,I just can't seem to get adjusted right. Scope keeps blacking out and I can't seem to get the eye relief right. Did any of ya'll have this problem when you got your first one? I imagine it'll be kinda like when I got an O/U shotgun and had to get used to it , but this sure is starting to fret me. I thought ,on Sat,that something must have gone wrong with my eyes or something. Then I picked up my 788 Rem and shot it just fine. NOPE,not the eyes so it must be me.

ANY help or suggestions are needed and WANTED,PLEASE.

My scope mounted back a bit further than my intuition told me.  I actually wound up using the pictures everyone posted of their encores in here as a guide... I mounted mine about average and it worked out pretty good.  The only problem I had with eye releif was downhill shots... luckily I'd put it on with a slip on recoil pad, and when I took that off it was perfect.  Wound up just getting a replacement recoil pad and now I'm quite happy with it.  It's a Leupold scope, so there's a little bit more forgiveness with eye-relief.

What scope are you using. Your eye relief my not be long enough. I have several Encore barrels with scopes and I have never had a problem. I have Leupolds on mine and they have good eye relief.  :D

Check out this thread...  You can see where other people are placing their scopes. The eyepiece of mine is about the same distance back as the one in the first picture.

Guys,
First thanks for replying. At the moment I've got a Nikon 3x9 on my 300WM. This is the one that is giving me all the fits. I have a 6x24 Tasco on my 25-06 and this one doesn't give me to hard of a time. The 25-06 has a weaver base and rings. The 300 has a one piece mount(I can't remember the name) that I let the dealer talk me into at a gunshow. I have a leupold 4x at home that I may try.

Thanks
Robert

I agree with iiibbb, shooting prone, downhill is "at best" difficult!

For the most part, I think it's a lot like shooting a bow, whether standing straight or shooting down from a treestand, the body MUST remain perpendicular to the sights!  When you tilt your head, is when your problems start!

When I'm shooting from the bench, I always sit up very straight!

Chuck,

Thanks for the advice. I've always sat as straight as possible due to a bad back. That's why I tried another gun. Granted the stock and all is different, but I had to prove to myself that it wasn't me.

Last nite I moved the scope forward til the rear bell sits over the hammer. That was after messing with it for a while. That's where it SEEMS better, but that was just mounting it and trying for a clearer picture. I've messed with guns all my life and have never had this much trouble with a scope.

That's the reason for my original post....FRUSTRATION!!!

Just could not get comfortable with a scope on my 30-06 Encore.  After trying several and differant locations, I switched to a non-magnifying red dot sight.  Love it!  I only carry this gun as a back up to other folks, and for close shots anyway.  Although I did shoot a small Black Bear with it last spring at about 250 yards.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
