.243 Ammo
« on: February 02, 2005, 07:55:25 AM »
I just bought a New Handi rifle in .243 with the laminate forearm and stock. I mounted a 6x18-50 scope on it(reach out n touch something). My question is I need some recommendations on ammo. I bought a box of Winchester CXP2 in 55 grain. this gun will mainly be used for chucks, coyote and deer. I plan on sighting in for 150-200 yards. Any advice...?

I don't know if your ammo with the 55grn bullets are coated or not but I suspect they are. For a new barrel, it might be better to shoot some inexpensive regular bullets to break-in the barrel and smooth it out a little. I have a older handi rifle in .243 with a bull barrel and it does Ok but the trigger on mine is still too stiff after a few years. I've heard that the newer ones have a better trigger pull. I reload ammo for mine and it is a little sensitive on some of the max loads out of the manuals. When I first bought mine I picked up a box of 80grn and 100grn Rem. and Win. ammo for break-in and empty cases.

My ultra varmint shoots Hornady ammo real well,,I don't reload as yet,,may not ever again,,but still save brass just in case.....anyway I've shot the 75gr hp and the 58 gr v max with as good as 1 inch 3 shot groups off bench at 100 yds.
Also bought 100 rounds from Cabelas when gun was new of 75 gr v max made by HSM,,Hunting Shack Manufacturing,,best group with that was 2 to 3 inches.
Polish your bore and chamber with bore paste,,I really think it helps,,as most guys here would likely agree.
