Want to get an Ultra and have it converted to Ackley Improved.  What is the process to do this?  I remember having read something about set back, what's that mean?  Rog

As I recollect, the set back is required cuz an AI case ends up slightly shorter than the standard round. Ackley improving a handi can only safely be done with a rimmed cartridge like a 30-30, etc......I think that's the way it goes, anyway!

So what I need to do to get a 30-06 AI, is to order a .308 and have the chamber reamed to 30-06AI.  That would get the correct length, and solve the set back problem.  Need to check with a local gunsmith and see if he can do that.  Thanks for the info.

what ya wanna do that for, dough-man? everything i've read says the '06 is the ackley chambering that benefits least from the so-called improvement, maybe 50 fps.
instead of ackley, maybe you could go the 300 howell route, which is a bit longer case but same case head as the '06. the boost is significantly over the ackley version.

is necessary if firing factory ammo or new unformed cases. This is another reason other than being incapable of setting the origional barrel back,,,for NOT reaming to Ackley Improved for a rimless round. The RIMMED rounds never need a 'crush fit', and only need to be properly sized for light contact of shoulder on future firings after the initial fireform shot. And,,the initial shot is headspaced by the rim of the case, and the rim recess in the barrel face. Rimmed cases are the way to go if you want an Ackley in a hinge barrel rifle. I really enjoyed my Handi 30/30AI while I had it,,great little rifle that would touch the first three rounds at 100 yds. If you want a rimless round to Ackley Improve,,use a bolt action rifle with its inherent camming ability-best for the first round fireform shot and "crush" fit. I've made and had several Ackleys,,,and the only reason I needed was,,,,," I want one".
